This is such a great story. A fantasy novel about a girl who grows up in an extremely patriarchal society where girls are deemed unnatural if they have gilded blood. Those with gilded blood are told they are demons and made to fight against monsters to help save the country.

The only reason I have given it 3 stars is because I found the writing a little simple and I wanted more, however I'm aware it is a YA novel and therefore it is correct for its target audience and I'm sure would have been a 5 out of 5 for the right audience.

I wanted to like this book so much, and I did, in the beginning.

It has taken me too long to get this book off of my TBR and into my hands. I really enjoyed the world building and the unwavering bonds between the characters. There was so much to like about Deka, mostly her development from an ashamed girl that was absolutely terrified of what she was capable of to a fierce, determined leader that found so much strength in who she was and from those around her.

I think the last half was a bit unevenly paced, as certain plot points moved at odd speeds or the sequencing felt off. Still, I will definitely continue this series to see what comes next.
