Tragic yet funny coming-of-age manga about a boy who is desperate to belong somewhere in the world, and the hearts of others. This story deals with a lot of hard-hitting themes, such as domestic violence, bullying, and identity. The stark contrast between Punpun's (and his family's) depiction as a ghost-meets-bird and the gritty rendering of the adult characters really highlights the humor to be found in such dark sides of humanity. Can't wait to read the whole series.

(this is a review for the entire series, too much clutter to do all the different volumes)

I started this off as a bit of an asano hater, sorry fans, but I really didn't enjoy nijigahara holograph. I've also tried and failed getting into punpun once or twice but been put off by the crass humor, the art style and tone. those things do still bother me but examining the manga as a whole I get that it's not your average coming of age story.
I read that when this was being published the number of readers fell as the story got darker and darker, but for me the opposite was true, I think it could've pushed even further into the depths of our protagonists psyche.

What a great introduction to the world of Punpun! Very much excited to continue onto the next omnibus! I found Punpun to be a very relatable character! I love his character, yet I also found him frustrating to read at times haha. He's very much thinking about himself, and is very shy and indecisive. The other characters are good too, but for sure, the focus is on Punpun himself.

I also like the art in this manga. It is very well detailed and there's a decent amount of mixing in the art, from the ugly and absurd faces of some characters, to the very realistic. Of course, as can see from the title, Punpun and his family members are portrayed as birds, and I'm curious to see if there's any meanings behind it.

All in all, very excited to continue the series!

"Dream big everyone! Because dreams are free!"

This is my second time reading this one, and I'm glad I took the time to do so. So often the first reading is always a little rushed; you just want to know what happens next! But the next time through is a slower, more deliberate journey, where you can pick up on the subtle things and early plot trajectories.

The new girl, Aiko Tanaka, totally captures the heart of our dear protagonist Punpun Punyama, and from there things get bumpy. The first volume is filled with dreams and hopes and wanting to get away (to fly away). Maybe this isn't so surprising, considering what is happening at home for Punpun and the internal struggles he deals wiht as he confronts what it means to be happy, to connect to another human, to then let that human down. On the surface, it feels like a romance. Here's our guy, there's our girl, they like each other, they fall apart, but they get together in the end. Which does, ultimately, happen (sort of, in a really twisted way). But the undertones and the soft whispers of something darker happening turn the series into a drama like no other.

The first volume does a good job of setting up the bait. The art is phenomenal, the characters are compelling and feel real (as real as a little ghost dude can feel), and the story is engrossing and leaves the reader waiting for what happens next.
