I'm a sucker for a hockey why-choose and I'm ok with amnesia as a trope, but the FMC in this story, Kennedy, even pushed my tolerance.  I found myself getting past sympathizing with her and instead wanting to smack her across the head because of her repeated naive behavior and bad choices.  All of the male romantic interests are psychos, which isn't unexpected since this is a dark romance.  You will have to suspend a little disbelief to think someone could have mafia ties and still get on a NHL team but not have money.... I find that some artistic license.  That said, mostly the story was fine. It was dragging in how long it was taking Kennedy to get her memory back and the competition between the men was getting a bit tiresome.  I also didn't realize that this was part of a duet and that I'd need to hang on to a book 2 to find out what is really going on.  I may read that, I may not.  So all in all, this was ok.  I didn't hate it, but it wasn't my favorite of the past 12 months.

When I started this book I had no idea it was a duet, which left me shocked at the cliff hanger. To be honest, I’m not a fan of the amnesia trope. I just find it hard to believe that the FMC has gone 5 years with zero contact or context from her old life. Also, how did she get a job/apartment if she doesn’t know her last name? She only knows her first name based on a nameplate necklace that she found in her hospital bag-but the hospital staff didn’t notice it?? You’re telling me that there is no way to identify a person if they can’t tell you who they are?? Wild. All that being said, I will be reading the second part of the duet once it is released.

I love hockey and I love why choose but this was honestly one of the worst books I’ve ever read. There was not enough hockey and not enough mafia. It was like the author just wanted to throw a couple tiny bits in there to make the description seem appealing to get more people to read it. I could not form any connection to any of the characters, there isn’t enough backstory or anything for you to get to know them, Kennedy is quite possibly the dumbest girl alive (yeah yeah I know, she has amnesia but be effing for real), and oh my apartment is burning down so I guess no better time than now for some sexy time. I CANNOT.
