A solid short story in between the second and third novel in the main series. I liked it, but I really wanted it to contain a bit more, a bit more of an addition to the entire series.
I cannot remember Declan or Ti being in the third book, but before I do end up starting my reread of it, I definitely hope so. I liked how both this story and the second book allude to different continents to this planet, fleshing it out a bit more. I also liked seeing a softer side to Mistress Coyle.

There's not much to say about this short story. It's simple but well-written. It introduces us to a new character and a relationship dynamic that hasn't existed in the main series. Although we do not explore the sea, readers are introduced to the idea that there are other, unexplored, lands on the other side. And while this has little impact on the series as a whole, just these simple conversations make the world feel a bit more fleshed-out.

Did I actually just read a human/spackle romance and enjoy it?? Patrick Ness, you little monkey you.
This was soft and warm and sad and full of feelings.
Spoiler
Interesting, and provides some food for thought on Mistress Coyle, but the human/Spackle thing was just a bit too weird to me. Not at all to the point that I would threaten them or attempt to burn them alive, they're both sweet characters and I definitely don't think that Spackle are animals! Still... it's cross-species and it's weird.
A spin-off novel about them would be kind of cool, albeit not necessary. I enjoyed seeing Mistress' Coyle warmer side.
Didn't feel like it added much to the story, but still a decent novella before starting the final book.
A very short side story from before the Spackle war, but still manages to pull you in and care for the characters. It was also great to see a caring side of Mistress Coyle.
I really hope that Declan and Ti will somehow find a way to be in the third book. They could change a lot! ❤️
