Christie's thrillers are never quite as fun for me as her classic mysteries, but I did end up enjoying this one quite a bit.
It took me a long time to really get into it (I think I was halfway through before I really got hooked). I think it was all the random characters that we just got glimpses of. I really loved Victoria's character and the more we got of her pov, the more I liked the book.

Disclaimer: This book does contain period typical racism and Orientalism toward people from the Middle East. Just be warned if that's upsetting to you.
I really enjoyed this book. If I could, I might rate it 4.5. I loved the spy plot and how the heroine gets sucked into all that. I do have to say, it's interesting to see the Red Scare and all that play out in a novel that was actually written during that time. While the plot would seem farfetched now, seemed in line with what people actually thought was happening then.

This book was just an alright read for me, I enjoyed it enough but I wasn’t completely engaged. It was very slow going for me and there were quite a lot of characters who I kept getting confused about. I struggled remembering who was who! Maybe it was just my brain at the time just not keeping up with it!
There are intelligence agents, all kinds of conspiracies and spies involved. There of course was murder alongside the mystery to work out who was not who they said they were. I worked out who the main culprit was from the start so that didn’t come as a shock to me at the end. This rarely happens to me with a Christie novel so I was happy to finally get it right for once!
Victoria was quite an irritating character so I never was able to bond with her. That is probably why I just found this an ok read. I just wasn’t invested in her character. The fact she travelled abroad to seek out a man she met once was a bit too far fetched for me! The romance side to Christie’s book I do find a bit tedious at times.
Overall, it was still a fun read and well written and I loved the setting. It just was a bit too dragged out for me with not much action.
