Dame Agatha was wise to stick to writing murder mysteries. This rare attempt at a spy novel is mostly lame and often rather silly. The entire premise upon which the plot depends is so poorly developed that it makes the whole story almost farcical. Also, Victoria Jones is an annoying flibbertigibbit.

Re-read this for the Read Christie Project 2022 - September.
Narrator: Emilia Fox

The story came back to me in bits and pieces once I started listening. The narrator did a good job and Victoria Jones, the heroine, had just the right balance of smarts and courage to make up for her impulsiveness and gullibility! The pacing was good and the twist in the tale was vintage Christie! As always Christie captures the essence of Baghdad with her succinct descriptions of the city and its environs. The city provides a colourfully exotic background for Victoria’s shenanigans!

I generally find Christie’s espionage tales somewhat dated, but with the present goings on in the world, they seem as relevant today as they did in their time. The intrigues and twisted principles of misguided people and governments are as prevalent today as they were during the Cold War era. I enjoyed this one more than I expected to 😃

Tremendous romp exuberantly performed by Emilia Fox. Loved that the heroine was working class and an unashamed liar who set off for Baghdad because she had a fleeting encounter in London with a man she fancied.
Portayed Christie's view on the Middle East, which is one of affection and respect; also archaeologists are almost the heroes of this tale.
