The Glittering Court

Richelle Mead

3.34 AVERAGE

This book seemed promising and like it would be an interesting look at what some women went through during the American colonial times, and there is some good imagery to it. However, there was so much going on in the second half that I started rolling my eyes and face palming.

It was like the author couldn't decide what they wanted to do so just threw in all the ideas. It was totally a 'but wait, there's more!' kind of second half.

Yet another start to a trilogy that I will likely not continue.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ 23%

This book sorely disappointed me. I put off reading it for a while because it just didn't sound very appealing to me. I eventually got it on my kindle and figured why not give it a shot. Richelle Mead has never let me down. Until now.

I just really did not like any of the characters. Adelaide was whiny and annoying (which is understandable seeing as what her position in life it, but still annoying). I didn't really like any of the glittering court girl aside from Mira. I didn't like Cedric at all, something about him just seems off. I got about 23% into the book and realized I just did not care what was happening, so it's being abandoned.

@ P.S. I love that book!

EXPECTATIONS: Richelle Mead has written Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, 12 books on the world that I adore. And also she is a creator of Rose and Dimitri, my OTP till the day I die. So when this book came out I just had to get it. However, somehow it took me the whole year to actually read it.

THE WORLD: It kinda screams to be called historical fiction but it really isn't. Basically we do have a vibe of old times when it was all about the title and huge dresses but then it does not keep. Like from time to time it still gets mentioned but there is no real vibe that you are in the past. Even tho the main idea of the book is that a girl goes to a Glittering Court where she is prepared to be a lady and be married off to the highest bidder.

CHARACTERS: Our main character is Adelaide and she is a runaway bride from arranged marriage. Tho she runs away to Glittering court which is really just a school for girls to learn how to be a lady and then be sold off to highest bidder for marriage. Anyways all these girls are there to learn what Adelaide was taught since childhood so there is no surprise Adelaide is the one that ends up being number one. What was funny however was how she had no idea how to take of herself without servants. Talking about white privilege I guess :D No but in reality I found Adelaide super annoying and just self absorbed. She has no care whatsoever for others, I mean she thinks she does but in reality it's this shallow care where you care just so they be like oh she is nice she cares. Yeah. And then there is Cedric, a typical poor boy but omg hot characters. Because you know if you are rich you are just an evil person and only the poor boy can truly love and be good. Needless to say had no care for him either.

ROMANCE: Isn't it obvious? Adelaide and Cedric cannot be together so what is forbidden must be the best. Overdone, boring and just who cares?

GOOD: I am not sure. I did end up giving this three stars but trying to put my finger on what is really good in this book...I cannot.

BAD: I cannot believe this comes from the author that created Vampire Academy?! The person who created Rose and Dimitri? Are you kidding me? This is something you pick up in gas station, another Selection in it's quality and bullshit. Also can somebody explain to me how the plot makes sense? So Adelaide runs to arranged marriage school to escape arrange marriage? Srsly, no logic or I am just too stupid to see it.

OVERALL: I used to think Richelle Mead is a genius because I have never met an author who managed to make me so obsessed with fandom as VA but damn, if I read Glittering Court before I read anything else of hers, I would never even want to give her other books a change. Boring and just full of tropes. Not continuing for sure.

@ P.S. I love that book!

Ugh, it was so tedious trying to read this. I give up for now..

In this tale it seems, as though, everyone has something to hide--things you will be left wondering about even after you read the last page. Adelaide Bailey isn't who she claims to be--in order to escape a less than ideal situation she takes the place of her maid as a part of the Glitering Court. Young women who are plucked from the lower classes, made into fine noble ladies, and shipped off to the new world in hopes of claiming a large price for their marriage. Unfortunately for Adelaide things don't go according to plan--as they rarely do.

Adelaide sticks to her guns throughout this book, rarely does she give in because it will make things easier. That being said--there was a lot of suspense build around things that were either never revealed, or were rather obvious (this may change based on follow up books) The story also lacked a fair rhythm--there were times when I was begging for a chapter to end or for there to be more action. Overall a cool premise!

I actually never finished this book. I made it very nearly to the end but I seriously lost interest when the story took a complete turn and suddenly we're on the frontier. I just don't even care how it ends. It honestly feels like it could have ended a few times already. Once you find out everything will work out, do you really need to read half a book again about it working out? I felt like the build up was interesting, and I enjoyed the glittering court parts in a trashy summer read kind of way. The romance wasn't too over done. But the "twist" made me think: seriously?! And everything after that was just unnecessary. I kept reading for a while thinking that something else was going to happen, but it didn't and I lost the will to care.
I will probably still read the rest of the series because I enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book enough to give the rest a chance.

Wasn't a fan of the book. Was lacking on all levels from romance to fantasy and everything in between. I really enjoyed reading [b:Vampire Academy|345627|Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1)|Richelle Mead|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1361098973s/345627.jpg|335933] however this story does not come close at all. Gave up reading the book on Chapter 4.

I enjoyed this book.

This was not what I was expecting, in a bad way. It was a weird Western.
