The Glittering Court

3.34 AVERAGE

Three and a half stars. It's a fun read but not literary in any sense. Basically, I viewed it a take on a spin on steampunk. I'm not saying that this *is* steampunk but that it reminds me more of that kind of made up universe (without the tehcnology) than anything else. I guess it's the made up alternate history universe that made me think steampunk. I enjoyed the characters and the story.

After so many epic fantasy books from one of my all time fav authors, I felt this series fell a bit flat. I still love it, though. I’ll gladly read anything Richelle puts out.

This was not one iota what I thought it was going to be ... and that was just perfect! I thought it was The Selection redux with girls competing for the prize of a wealthy and famous marriage. This instead is about a young woman, Lady Elizabeth, who simply does not want to end up in an arranged marriage and chooses a new destiny as a member of the Glittering Court. The Glittering Court is a voluntary commitment to join a group of young women who will leave for the new world, where women in general are scarce. While at times this relationship between the women and the company who is bartering the marriages does feel transactional, the decisions of who to choose as a spouse is solely left in the hands of the women. Pretty enlightening actually.

There is a witty dialogue throughout, two other Glittering Court young women who I hope will get their own novels in this series and of course a romance for Lady Elizabeth (and so refreshing to not have a love triangle anywhere in sight!). Fun story to listen to with the myriad of different accents used.

Grades 10 and up. Sexual situations that are truly quite vague do dominate the last third of the book. (Compared to Mead's Vampire Diaries, this is TAME!)

3.5 stars - A bit slow to start and predictable for the first half or so, but it gets better. I quite like the characters.

Richelle Mead did an excellent job in the world building and drama in her new series. It made for a fun and great read as we develeved into new lands feeling like a pioneer. Mead set up the ending to continue the series with the main two secondary characters. Can't wait for more books in the Glittering Court series.

love it

Such a good book. Richelle did it again! Started a little slow but it quickly got good and kept my attention

I received an ARC through a Goodreads Giveaway.

This was a good start for a new trilogy. I can't wait to see what the other 2 books entails.

This was one of those books where I wasn't quite sure what was going on, but I didn't hate it? Lots of scene changes, and a pretty jumpy plotline, which instead of making me feel in suspense, only made me feel discombobulated. It wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't what I was expecting. The blurb didn't help matters either, as I'm not entirely sure that whoever wrote it even read the book? So strange. Overall, a decent read, but nothing spectacular, and certainly not what they were marketing when they released this book.

So different from the other works I've read from this author. Enjoyed it. The particular genre isn't my normal so it wasn't love for me even though there was nothing I disliked necessarily. Not sure I'd read the next book in the series but that's only because it just wasn't my thing.
