I would’ve preferred a bit more action. If not fantasy, something with a bit more grit...?
This one is pitched as The Selection meets Reign. I've read The Selection although it's been a really long time. I've never watched Reign so I cannot attest to the accuracy of the claims here. I will give it that it is really fast paced. However, it's kind of on the silly side in that the story is so outlandish at times and the characters act outlandish. I didn't really like any of the characters either. It was all very dramatic. It also kind of went to royal society to gold mining on the frontier...so that was odd. It was very all over the place.
This was a surprisingly good book. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. The author did such an amazing job with the writing style of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was such a quick read. I think it was a bit odd when one of the characters did a complete 360 from her previous attitude. But that was my only problematic portion I found in the book.
It took me a while to become invested in Mead's other series (I mean like three books), but this one had me hooked immediately. I absolutely loved the way she drew inspiration from our world and history to create this different fantasy world, and all our past hardships still made sense in this other world. I loved the characters. Adelaide was so spunky and quick-witted. I thought the overall general concept of the three different novels following three different perspectives was ingenious. I basically am obsessed and cannot wait to see what we learn in the next book.

A lot of things happened in this book. It was an interesting story with an interesting heroine, though I was surprised by just how many twists occurred in the plot and how long it all went on (before very abruptly rapping up). Not a super fan of the pro colonial sentiments, but they are the sentiments I’d expect from a privileged couple moving to newly settled land (and I expect these views will be critiqued a lot by the heroines in the following two books of the series) who are more concerned with gaining religious freedom rather than considering the rights stripped from the land’s actual peoples.
This book was hard to get through due to the boringness of the plot and lack of romance.
