Very different
I've heard this compared to The Selection, I think that is a fair comparison. The author writes beautifully, but this is a very fun, fluffy book which I enjoyed immensely!

I should've known, because it's not the first time that Mead does this. Interesting setting, but weak motivations and unbelievable plot twists make this a "meh" read.
Absolutely AMAZING! It took no time at all for the story to delve straight into action. What I really loved is how we started in a palace in Osfrid, took a journey to the Glittering Court, jumped on a ship for two months and ended up in the New World all without it seeming too sudden or confusing. You lived through the character and truly got to see Adelaide's development as a character. It was a really great read that left me satisfied yet wanting more to come and u can't wait for the next book to come out!
2.5 stars. I felt really meh about this book, which is disappointing considering how much I've enjoyed most of Mead's other books. I'll probably still read the other two books in the trilogy though (I'm super curious to find out more about Mira).

Imagine comparing yourself to the mess that is The Selection like that's a good thing and yet somehow being WORSE than the Selection??

dnf @ 48%. So I started this book over 2 months ago and I read the first 200 pages in like 3 days. I didn’t LOVE the story line but I didn’t hate it either. Everything was pretty mediocre for me. But then I started to lose interest in the story. I didn’t care for the characters or the plot. And so after two months of not reading it I’ve decided to DNF it because it’s just not working for me. Such a disappointment because this book had so much potential.
This was entertaining enough to listen to as an audiobook while cleaning etc, but that's it. The beginning was quite enjoyable - I liked this more than 'the Selection' , which was so dull that I can't remember if I finished it - but the rest of the book was just boring. The plot isn't strong enough, there's no surprises, the main character has her moments but most of the time she is annoying and uninteresting. Also, why is this called a fantasy book?? There was nothing supernatural going on.
