this book is worth it being called a "Penguin Classic". I have read a few classics which just haven't been a classic for me. but this is different. this is a work of art. I honestly have never read a book with a character who is so so multilayer. Svejk is so different but an amazing character, to label Svejk an idiot would be completely wrong. because he's not an idiot, Svejk is something much more than an idiot, he sees the world completely differently but god I loved reading about him. Hasek, wow what an author. this is a work of art, it made me laugh like no book ever has, everything is so well thought out. it's so refreshing to read something like this and it makes you think, several times I thought to myself how on earth does he make a passage so funny? it made me really appreciate satire as an art form. one of the funniest book i have ever read period!

"Beg to report, Sir, I am an idiot!"
The Good Soldier Svejk is absurd and damn clever. It serves as a complimentary text to the Dada art movement, both commenting on war and patriotism through a sort of painful humor. All is lost. All is absurd.

Humbly report, this is one of the most unique books I have ever read. The version I read (Everyman's Library Edition) has 156 illustration and each and every one of them brought a smile to my face. Svejk is a comedic rambling character that will drive you crazy, must like those he meets on his journey. There is a mixture of hilarious comedy followed by some of the most boring and mind numbing dialogue you will ever read, if it was published now it would be chopped to pieces, yet I still give this book 5 stars because it had the ability to be both a hilarious and relevant commentary on WWI and all war really. Fans of Catch-22 will more than likely enjoy this book, the style is similar and also very different. Unfortunately Hasek died before he could finish the book but I found the ending very satisfying none the less. Humbly report, this is the end of said review.
