A historical YA novel that I read a few years back and still read to this day. I just love all the lines in this novel and all the characters. John and his relationship with Elzevir is an unusual one and just amazing in its own way.

read this because of my grandfather, who told me it was his favourite book as a teenager and reminisces about it with child-like awe in his eyes whenever it's mentioned. while not profound, it was a sweet tale with true meaning and beautiful imagery. those who have had the pleasure of seeing this small part of the world are deeply envied by me.

I feel so bad for younger me, who was denied reading this at the peak of her Treasure Island, Kidnapped etc phase. I don't think I'd ever heard the title before, though I was familiar with the author's name, though I'm not sure why as I hadn't read any of his works before this. Well anyway, this and treasure and curses and smugglers and all kinds of tragic events that I loved as a kid. Glad I've read it now even if I missed it then.
