I first read this book in school for English and loved it then as I love it now. The book is set in the smuggling era in the south of England, near Dover, and follows the story of John Trenchard. This book is indeed a slow burner but it is beautifully written and I believe it is a highly underrated classic.

Only think didn't like John suddenly becoming greedy didn't feel foreshadowed enough

An underrated classic.

A simple but affecting classic adventure.

This tale of smugglers set in Dorset was a childhood favourite of mine that I thought I'd revisit before watching the new adaptation that was on this past weekend. I'm happy to say that I still love it - I finished reading it with a satisfied sigh. It's a cracking adventure full of interesting characters and a terrific story of friendship.

3.5 stars. Good atmospheric writing and a brilliant engaging tale for younger readers but way too many plot coincidences & conveniences to make it overall convincing in the second half.

Honestly, I'd never read the book before, though I was almost certain I had, but I had watched the movie. And I loved the movie, still have it on my shelves.

So I found it quite different from what Fritz Lang made of it and was a bit disappointed. The story in itself is full of adventures, but a bit slow in the way it is told and, probably because it's directed at an audience of children in the first place, very moral.

However, I was deep in my sick bed when I read this, so maybe that's why I didn't like it as much as I thought I would...
