The ending was so unsatisfying I’m not sure why it was written like that. Also I feel like a lot should’ve been cut this book took too long to get to the point. Sorryyyyyyy I enjoyed the first two but idk what happened with this one

I hate the main love interest. He genuinely is a terrible person… Team Daniel all the way. Daniel deserves the world

Wow, I knew I was holding out for a reason and let me tell you, it was so worth it.

On the surface, as was my complaint in the prior books, this is a simple "will they or won't they"  romance. At the depths, it is about war and loss.

“It pains me to see world-weariness in someone who shouldn’t have lost their innocence. But I see that it is well and truly gone, and trying to stop the forces in motion is futile now.”

The loss of innocence, the loss of our loved ones, the loss of our own humanity. Everyone in this book goes through it. Aldrik lost his innocence at a young age, he cares very little for a whole lot. We watch him struggle with caring, and then we watch him be really good at it, and we watch him grow from an unfeeling
alcoholic
to a warm and compassionate friend and brother and lover.

Vhalla, man, she has lost everything. She has grown so much in the past few books that every naive little annoyance I have with her is basically dust. Unfortunately, being forced to grow up by becoming a pawn in a war you have no interest in fighting and killing people who just want to survive is not exactly the greatest coming of age story.

It was a sinister sort of pleasure to unleash pain, and she couldn’t refrain.

Man, even the side characters killed it. Baldair is a beaut. He cares way more than he should for a brother that has given him nothing. His friendship with Vhalla is so cute. Also, sorry boys but your dad sucks.

Usually I see these false happy endings coming from 100 miles away, but this one slapped me right in my face and I'm mad about it because I've literally read these before.

If this was what victory looked like, what was defeat?

The whirlwind of emotions I felt while reading this book…..I hate it and love it.

We see Vahlla and Aldrik’s relationship build and blossom within these pages. It goes from slow burn to intense heat as the world around them also crescendos. I enjoyed seeing Vahlla grow in her abilities and grow in her confidence of herself. The relationship she builds and grows also becomes heart warming.

I will say, the one thing I did NOT enjoy, besides the emperor, was the attention Daniel was giving her. Though she did state her position and he did not push her, I don’t like when there are love triangles like this; I feel like it almost cheapens the main love story.

Overall though, I quite enjoyed this book in all its gory, raw, emotional glory!
