Once again, I find myself in the middle of the night, shaking my kindle like an etch a sketch, and growling at Amazon to gimme it, already.

It was a nice twist to see a character who isn’t charming and all capable, and instead suffers from self doubt and social anxiety. It was a bit intense at times, but a great touch all the same.

Another great element to this story was the lack of romance. Jade was a mature, adult woman and yet she was her own strong character. She didn’t need a man to complete her life, or save her from her many challenges and dangers, and
Spoilereven when she did become friendly with a super handsome, powerful entity, the relationship stayed innocent and friendly.
Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot of romantic potential for the next books in the series but nothing happened in this novel.

My main complaint was the repetitiveness, at times it just felt like a predictable urban fantasy, where not much happens in between encounters, and I can guess how everything is going to end. There were also some details that didn’t quite add up to me
Spoilerlike the way she just made friends with a dangerous, deadly vampire, and how neither of them ever suspected who they were encountering at night, until the very end.

The ending wrapped the plot up nicely, while still leaving an intense cliffhanger, that made me want to get the next one ASAP, even though I'd basically given up on [a:K.M. Shea|6893644|K.M. Shea|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1479143546p2/6893644.jpg] until reading this novel.

I'd recommend this novel to young adults and adults who you enjoy urban fantasy, friendly banter, and strong female characters.

3.5 stars although I loved large parts of this, there was an aspect that was written in a manner that ruined that part. I plan to read book 2, so those lackluster parts did not take away from the overall enjoyment.

Part fantasy. Part developing romance? Part detective/police mystery.

I have read two other magiford series, I know the world building, and find it solid and interesting.

I love the developing relationship between Considine and Jade, both the masked and unmasked interactions are fun and engaging.

Jade’s personality quirks are quite fun. Her ability to burn any food that requires heating is reaching absurd levels. Her social anxiety is well written.

Considine also has quite the personality quirk. He is exasperated with his charges, that his best friend made him promise to care for and protect as he was dying. He is overall bored with existence, but manage to see the absurd in most things, and thus finds amusement that way.

Where the book stumbles is Jades job, because the detective part of this is not well written. Clues are found, but who has what clues, and what is reported and not reported is unclear. Someone is plotting something, Jade has her thoughts about what is going on, but we are not told which thoughts are shared, and which are just guesses she has not yet shared with her superiors, it is one big mess.

But suddenly her superiors have concluded who the culprit is, even though the steps to how they reached that conclusion are missing in what the reader gets informed about, so I sat with a feeling of accidentally having skipped something because I was confused as to how they reached that conclusion, and how they got the clues that they had.

It also seems that they might have been to quick in their conclusions, but are still open to other developments, but the author really needs to straighten her writing, so as to ensure that the reader is brought along, instead of just dumping something in there for the reader to believe.
