Loved this, reminded me of normal people
This was really annoying but I somehow also liked it despite how much I hated it. Would’ve really liked some quotation marks for the dialogue but go off Claire Daverly.

TALKING AT NIGHT is a heart-wrenching romance novel about second chances, self-discovery, love and loss. The story follows two star-crossed lovers, Will and Rosie, as they maneuver through life and find themselves reunited when they both need each other most. This poignant will-they-or-won’t-they romance is equally charming and tragic as it tackles serious issues such as mental health, eating disorders, grief, and trauma. I adored every moment of this book and couldn’t help but fall in love with these beautifully rendered characters (although I wanted to knock some sense into Rosie at times). I highly recommend if you’re looking for a compelling contemporary romance novel with substance.
slow-paced
People keep saying this is like One Day crossed with Normal People and I can see the comparisons. Two young people meet, form an intense connection, deal with their own individual shit and grief is a big theme in this.
Unfortunately though, this book is not as well written nor does it have the emotional depth of either.
I really enjoyed the first ~30% — when they were still at school and Josh was around and all the fraught teenager crush stuff. After that it started to get a bit dull and by the end I was struggling to pay attention from how bored I was.
Also this author kept slipping into what I call “fanfiction style”. It’s like she wrote an outline for the chapter and never bothered to go back and actually write the scene. A lot of telling and now much showing. For a book literally called “Talking At Night”, featuring two characters who build their connection from late night chats, we didn’t really actually get to HEAR the contents of most of these conversations. It was all “they talked until 3am” and “he told her about [traumatic event]” and it just really impacted my ability to be emotionally invested in the characters, the story, or the romance.
That being said I will always be a sucker for stories about life altering loves and people who orbit one another for years after knowing each other when they were younger. So like, 3 stars, I guess.

A decent and beautiful novel, but I don’t understand why some authors choose to a) make some characters who clearly just need to communicate in order to get together NOT COMMUNICATE (I’m also looking at you, Normal People), and b) make the inexplicable decision not to use quotation marks. When did quotation marks become uncool???
