After That Night

Karin Slaughter

4.2 AVERAGE

I don't know how good this particular book was compared to her others because I'm incapable of being objective here. I am just so obsessed with this series and the characters that I impatiently await new installments and inhale them the moment they're released. "After That Night" was no exception- it's a unique storyline and beyond fucked up, but solidly entertaining.

Karin Slaughter freaks me out with her seriously twisted plotlines and gory details, but no other crime fiction out there comes close for me. I couldn't put this one down and am already anxiously awaiting the next one.

low rating due to low personal enjoyment . despite usually liking crime thrillers i am not its target audience thats for certain, it was okay until the cliche wifey hubby type shit thats clearly geared towards latter younger adulthood age to middle aged housewives, not young bisexual men

This was my first Karin Slaughter book, and while I enjoyed the story, I struggled with the reading experience due to the structure and pacing. The long chapters, with no clear paragraph breaks to break them up, created a mental block for me—I often found myself reluctant to pick it back up. It felt like a commitment every time I sat down to read, which definitely took away from the overall enjoyment.

The plot itself was intriguing, with Slaughter’s signature dark and gritty storytelling. However, the heavy use of technical medical vocabulary made certain sections feel dense and slow. While I appreciate attention to detail, it sometimes felt like it disrupted the flow of the narrative.

⚠️ Trigger warning: This book deals with sensitive topics, including rape and abuse, which are central to the story. Slaughter doesn’t shy away from difficult subjects, and some parts were particularly hard-hitting.

Despite my struggles with the structure, I did enjoy the mystery and investigation. The story kept me engaged, but I felt the ending was a little rushed—there were no clear hints leading up to it, which made it feel abrupt rather than satisfying.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 – A solid thriller with a gripping story, but the long chapters and dense writing style made it harder to stay fully immersed. If you’re a Karin Slaughter fan, you’ll likely enjoy this, but it wasn’t the easiest read for me.

3.5 rounded down. I'm always excited for a new book featuring Will and Sara, and I cruised through this one in four days (very fast for me these days). This installment was less suspenseful than many of her previous books (though just as horrifically violent), as the majority of the crimes being investigated happened in the past. However, I found it to be good character-building, for Sara especially, but also for Will and Faith. The ending fell a little flat for me, but I'm already ready for the next one!

Karin Slaughter is a fantastic writer, and generally I really enjoy her stories, but this one wasn’t one of her best. This was a book club pick and I haven’t read other books in the Will Trent series, so part of my lower review is due to that.
Overall, the book went on too long. I felt like it could have been wrapped up about 50 pages sooner. The story also seemed to take forever to get going. Once it finally did though, it unraveled really well!

I have read the majority of the books in both the will Trent and Sara series’. I love Sara and adore will) so much so that I was happy to get another 17 hrs with them. I also liked that this series finally went back into a past we have heard so much about in many books but was largely vague and unresolved. That said, for someone not in my position, I imagine this story would feel rather long and slow, particularly due to constant repetition.

For example, will and Sarah’s described her engagement ring and the backstory behind it identically, nearly word for word and then still two more characters did the same. The editor was asleep at the wheel for sure.

Overall I loved it because I love spending time with these characters and hope it wasn’t the final song. The ending did seem final.
