The plot twists had me a little gagged but not as much as I expected. The ending was quite abrupt as well but I literally devoured this book in a day. I WAS SAT for the drama.
This was so good. I really enjoyed Take It Back and this one was even better. I was totally engrossed and couldn't wait to get answers.
I audibly gasped when we found out that Yasmin and Andrew had another kid before Max. However, I then started to guess that maybe Max had the same illness and Andrew and Leila wanted to essentially euthanize him to make it less painful and to spare Yasmin the trauma.
But what a WILD and heartbreaking choice.
I, however, did not guess that Max wasn't really sick and that they were just mistaken and misinterpreting symptoms of pesticide. When we got the reveal that Max wasn't Andrew's kid, I kind of thought maybe he had found that out and used the EB as a ruse the kid his wife had with another man. But, nope, just poor, poor Andrew.
And the reveal that Will (Leila's husband...who was clearly a POS fishing for quotes for his article) was the father! Ugh.
Basically, it was amazing and horrific and heartbreaking and so good. 4.5 rounded up.

Everyone in Leila’s life was horrible!!! I didn’t like any of these characters at all. My dislike for them grew the more I read about each of them, but I was interested enough to want to know what happened.
I would’ve liked the court room scenes to be a bit more tense. I found them to be boring as compared to the other parts of the story. I’m not usually one to pick up a thriller. This one was fine. It was pretty fast paced and I was intrigued by the initial premise of an accidental death of a child. I suspected the twist pretty early on in the book so the reveal in the end wasn’t too shocking.

This is the first time I’ve read a legal drama and I am thoroughly impressed by the authors ability to grip the reader with every sentence. I couldn’t put this book down! Just as you think you know what’s going to happen a new revelation is revealed that audibly had me saying “what!”. I now want to read all of Kia Abdullah’s books, wow just wow!
Graphic: Child death
Moderate: Suicidal thoughts
Minor: Death of parent

Oh my, I can’t believe my luck in finding another incredible novel so soon!!
Next of Kin was my first in the legal subgenre and I’m confident in saying it won’t be my last. I absolutely devoured this book basically in one sitting, it’s one that once you start, you can only stay until the end and can’t put down.
This seems such a straight-forward story on the surface, but I assure you it’s absolutely not: the twist took me by surprise one after the other, and I couldn’t actually predict any of them. The writing was so good and the characters felt real in all their characteristics, internal struggles and flaws. Dialogues were on point. I cannot recommend it enough to all thrillers lovers, even the ones who like me hadn’t yet tipped their toes into legal thriller waters. Amazing!! (I’m actually debating with myself if this is actually more of a 5 star, so maybe I will also up the rating)
