There is something in this book for everyone, whether you have kids or not.

Things My Son Needs to Know about the World by Fredrik Backman

A series of letters that a new father has written to his infant son that he expects to be read once his son grows older.

The book has the Backman aura right from the beginning - humour, wisdom and ability to touch the right chords of the reader. It describes the various experiences of new parents and the journey to raise a child without any pre-defined instructions manual while imparting invaluable wisdom and even raising questions about the ways of the world.

At first, I thought the book would be a casual read and those who have children would relate to it. But I couldn't be more wrong. This book is for anyone and everyone. Afterall, we all need to know things about the world, don't we?

PS: The book is a treat for Fredrik Backman fans as it has multiple anecdotes from his life which seem to have paved the way in some characters and events in his novels like A Man Called Ove and Anxious People.

I will read everything this man writes. ♥

“Making her laugh is a bit like wearing rain boots that are a little too big and jumping into the deepest of puddles. I’m blunt and sharp and full of black and white. She’s all my color.”

“But, here: I just want you to know that I’m not going to try to trick you into thinking there’s no evil in the world. Because there is. This world sometimes seems like it’s full of incomprehensible, unintelligible, unembraceable, inexorable evil. Violence and injustice and greed and blind rage. But it’s also full of all that other stuff. The small things. Kindness between strangers. Love at first sight. Loyalty and friendship. Someone’s hand in yours on a Sunday afternoon. Two brothers reconciled. Heroes who stand up when no one else dares. A fiftysomething man in a Saab who slows down when he sees your turn signal and lets you into his lane during rush hour. Summer nights. Children’s laughter. Cheesecake. And all you can do is decide which side you want to be on. Which pile you want to contribute to.”

A cute book of short anecdotes and stories. Not my favorite Backman book, as it feels like it’s trying a bit hard, but I might feel differently if I was a parent.
