Cute series but the romantic action moves so slowly! Let Katie and Owen get together and be happy already. I will read the next one but if no happy, no reading anymore
ok, I started this one and just couldn't finish it. It remains open on my Kindle. I think I should not have forced myself to read it right after reading #2 in the series. Will come back to it at some point.
funny
lighthearted
mysterious
medium-paced
Sorry book #3 really lost me. It was all over the place. And once again we have Katie keeping something from Owen that she should have told him. And we have the dumbest reason ever that ends up sending Katie off to a different place. I started to be able to call out the plot in this book and that's never a good thing.
Katie and Owen are finally together. They have the lamest dates ever (I said it) with making out here and there. Katie gets a fairy godmother in this one. And apparently it's the same one that helped (badly) Cinderella out. I wish that the book had focused on that more since I think it could have been funny to find out more about the fairy godmother and her terrible plots to get people together. Katie loses her immunity (a freaking gain) in this one, but on purpose and someone also gets possessed (don't ask).
The only reason that I gave this book 2 stars was that we finally get some backstory on Owen and his adopted parents in this one. I wish that Katie and Owen had visited with them longer. Everything else in this book was a snooze. There is once again the lamest magical fight in this one and at this point I don't see why anyone is worried about Merlin. He just seems to sit around and does some rah rah nonsense here and there

I varied between whether to give this a 3 or a 4 and invariably went with 4. It is a low 4. My argument for the 3 is it felt like "more of the same" of the series. My argument for a 4 is that I enjoyed the series, and I chose to read this because it's a light, fluffy read...but still chick lit with substance (the substance being the magic element).
Starting the book was the relief that Katie was finally dating Owen, but of course things went exasperatingly wrong when Katie finds herself with a fairy godmother. I thought this was probably the strongest story line of the book. Ethelinda has good intentions but is totally worthless as a fairy godmother (and detrimental to your love life). She doesn't see the damage she's doing even when Katie is trying to reason (very nicely) with her. Fan-tastic. She made it so whenever she showed up, you'd tense up because you wondered what disaster would inevitably appear.
Owen and Katie's relationship in the book was a little on the disappointing side (but of course, whenever a will-they-or-won't-they end up on the "they will" side, it's always disappointing. Grain of salt). The main plot, or invariably what Idris had planned for the book was also a little disappointing, or at least where Katie was involved. Somewhat interesting (and it borders on spoiler to the end of the review, but not overtly) is that the author has created a bigger enemy beyond the distractable and, dare I say, likable Idris? This is good for me, because I usually only half want them to get the better of him, and he always seemed more of a nuisance than a real threat. We'll see what the remaining books of the series bring.

I did NOT like the end of the book, so there better be a sequel. Aside from the end, this was my favorite in the series so far.
I must admit this isn't my top favourite of the series, but I still had fun reading it. I really love Owen, and for him I don't mind the repetitions in this book. Do I wish Katie would communicate more with Owen? Yes. Do I wish the ending was different? Yes. Will I re-read the next book at some point? Also yes!
This series is the kind of series you want to read after a long day at work. Don't think. Just read. Just have fun. And for all the simplicity of these characters, I find them comforting. I love how supportive Katie's roommates are. I love how sweet and down to earth Owen is. I love the little side couples.
I am not a huge fan of the fact Katie thinks she can do everything herself, but she'll get better.
I thought after learning more about Owen and seeing how he reacted to her secrets would prevent Katie from doing such a stereotypical drama move. That's why I was so disappointed from the ending and the fact Katie chose not to confide in him. I mean after what happened with her immunity in the second book, she should have gone straight to Owen when these weird things started happening. Also, I wish Merlin was a bit more supportive. The way he treated Katie in the end was too cold and professional. I feel like he has been using Owen, Katie, Rod...and everyone else to get what he wants.
On a good note, the future seems bright for Rod and now Katie's friends know about magic so Katie can stop using stupid excuses to hide what she does at work.
And now...back to Texas.

This book starts off unusually slow for the series, and while the first half we are dragged through Katie's rather snore-worthy angst about what to buy Owen for Christmas and such, the second half picks up considerably when the bad guys kick up their plan to take over the Spell marketing world and our heroine is possessed. Still, the complete 180 decision katie makes at the end leave me hoping Swendson had a conctract for the 4th book before #3 was released, because the ending is rather cruel, even for a cliffhanger.
The relationship between Owen and Katie in this book feels like it's gone the way of Duncan and Veronica [Mars]. More sibling than S.O. If not for Rod liking Katie's friend Marcia, I would have hoped something would develop between Rod and Katie. It's like in Akazukin Chacha: Owen is the talented, cute, but rather stick-in-the-mud Shiine (or maybe Teacher Serabi), and Rod is the more lively and likable Riiya.
#TeamRod! Or anyone else other than Owen.
The fairy godmother was annoying. She was basically Murphy's Law swathed in layers of faded taffeta. Reminded me of something in Jasper Fforde's novels where a plot device is this physical thing you hurl, like a smoke bomb (if I am remembering correctly). In this case, just when things seem to be going well: Boom. Ethelinda attacks.
Somehow at the end of the book I wasn't sure who the antagonist was. Probably Sylvia?
What is Mr. Bones?
It's 2 a.m. Do I go to sleep or read the next book until dawn?
