Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

I listened until two minutes into chapter five, I just couldn't handle it anymore.
I'm very sensitive to racism, always have been and have avoided this book for that reason until now but had to read it for school. I pushed as far as I could before DNFing, school isn't worth it.

NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I READ THIS BOOK ITS JUST A RACIST MAN COMPLAINING!

The way that the entire continent of Africa and its people are used as a device to underscore the psychological toll that colonization takes on the colonizer is sickening.

And yes, I am judging this book as a contemporary reader because it is not 1900.

Two stars because the prose gets the point across, that the process of colonization is taxing on the oppressor if they have any kind of conscience. However, it's whack that the white people were the only ones Conrad could empathize with enough to characterize.

This book makes me so angry. We need to stop recommending whiney white man books to each other.

This book is just plain racism. It is not good.

I get that this book is interesting to study and analyse (I had too read this for uni class too) but that does not make this book more interesting.
It is written in a very weird way, I had te reread sentences and paragraphs to understand what was really said but I think I missed 90% of the story. I read somewhere the author wanted to portray the difficulty of going through the jungle in his writing and I can say he succeeded in that.

Would absolutely not recommend this book, spare yourself, love yourself.
