I'm torn about this book. While I think I understand the narrator and the central themes of this novella, the heavy subject matter of the doom and gloom of colonialism was told a bit too heavy handedly and in my opinion still misses its mark. While the heart of darkness is quite obviously the white man's conquest for wealth at the expense of their souls through their treachery, racism, and violence, I still find it somewhat tone deaf from such an unfeeling narrator (like Meursalt of The Stranger). Why anyone was infatuated with Kurtz is beyond me.
