I'm torn about this book. While I think I understand the narrator and the central themes of this novella, the heavy subject matter of the doom and gloom of colonialism was told a bit too heavy handedly and in my opinion still misses its mark. While the heart of darkness is quite obviously the white man's conquest for wealth at the expense of their souls through their treachery, racism, and violence, I still find it somewhat tone deaf from such an unfeeling narrator (like Meursalt of The Stranger). Why anyone was infatuated with Kurtz is beyond me.

Pretty good book, the writing was incredible but I had a really hard time getting used to it. Definitely will need to look into the history surrounding this book and its context!

I love 'Apocalypse Now', and I'm somewhat annoyed I only just got around to reading 'Heart of Darkness.' I found the book itself quite gripping as we follow Marlow's account of his travels through the Congo and eventual persuit of Kurtz.

As a somewhat pompous European, he intially presents Africa as this backwater, and antithesis of European civilisations. But, without spoiling too much, after Marlow meets Kurtz, he finds himself with a different view (and maybe the actual view of Conrad - who people just dismiss as another 19th century racist perhaps before they finish the book).

There is an awful lot of metaphor in Conrad's work, and admittedly a lot of it has probably gone over my head. But, it was still definitely worth reading and will probably be on my mind for a while.
