I went into this expecting a contemporary novel about the situation in the Kongo at the end of the nineteenth century. Instead, the novella turned out to be a story about a white man that happened to be set in the Congo and contained a couple of references to how it is strange that black people are seen as enemies, criminals and so on. Most of the book was unintelligible musings on different topics.

well.. it was a book and i read it

Influential, relevant, yet outdated in its message.

It's an easy read on a difficult subject. I'd often heard that Chinua Achebe hated the book, partly because it's a book about Africa in which Africans rarely speak, which in my opinion is a fair criticism. That said, I don't think it deserved the level of vilification that Achebe hurled at the book.
