more so skimmed, than 100% read this re-read, but I gotta say this love triangle has me reaching for book 2 instantly...

4/5 stars - I throughly enjoyed this reimagined King Arthur/Round Table story! I love the elements of magic, historical fiction, and power systems. I think it was a little longer than needed to be, and the writing could have helped explain the complex systems in a bit more detail, but otherwise this was fantastic!
-
spoilery thoughts:
- Briana (bree) and Alice join UNC's pre-college program after Bree's mother died
- Bree finds the Order of the Round Table (descended from Arthur) is a real establishment on campus rooted in racist history
- Nick takes on Bree as his Page to help her find what really happened to her mother, since she knows she saw a Merlin in the hospital
- Bree can resist Mesmer, has exceptional Sight and can create mage fire
- Sel, the Kingsmage is trying to uncover who Bree really is throughout the trials for her to earn her spot as a Squire
- More and more demon attacks are happening on campus and more First-ranked lines are being called by their knights to fight, leading to the big war, if Nick (Arthur's first-ranked) is called
- Sel and Bree come to an understanding and find evidence in the old Davis house of Sel's mother opening portals and Bree's mother's accident being a true accident
- Nick's father (Sir Davis) is the one opening up the portals and letting demons through
- Bree's mother's accident actually an accident, but Sel's mother (who was blamed for the portal openings) had escaped her prison to help Bree's mother
- Bree and two other Black professors help Bree talk to her grandmother and mother through their magic, they call "root" power, not aether
- Potential of romance brewing between Sel and Bree, even though she and Nick are together
- New things to understand about Merlin's and their blood Oaths
- After the trails, Nick class on Bree to be his squire and he accepts, but then Sir Davis threatens Bree to decline or his Kingsmage will Mesmer Alice and Bree's father, she accepts
- Nick and Davis are gone and the Pages, squires, and scions travel through underground tunnels to find them at the campus bell tower, trying to uncover Excalibur (the famous sword)
- Bree takes a hold of the sword because she is actually the decendent of Arthur, and Nick is from Arthur's right hand man
- Arthur (slaveowner) and her maternal ancestor had sex, and had Bree and this line has been passed down for generations and hunted by Davis and his people

This is a great book, I was truly surprised by the twists and turns of the story. It's a classic YA story, it has quests, magic, kings, myths, and a hot sorcerer.
The plot is very gripping and Bree makes for a very likable charector, so it was nice to follow along. I was very surprised by how the story progresses, and I love how the book ends.
The book deals with a lotnof sensetive issues like race and the history of space ownership in the South. It does this with a lot of nuance which was very nice to see.

listen, i really, really wanted to like this book but we have what we have. and there’s why i found this book is not for me
world building
honestly I find it a little bit confusing. i felt like a ton of information was being dumped on me without really explaining what was going on. otherwise, the whole idea of the knights of the round table and the legend of Arthur I really liked.

characters
i can’t say anything about the characters just because they was bland. i didn’t feel the connection between me and them which i do not like. most of the time i just didn’t care about them at all

romance
in my opinion the worst part because of the love triangle and a little bit of instalove. i do not like any of these tropes so for me it was a miss. maybe without love triangle this book would be so much better

the ending
about one-quarter of the way through the book, i made an assumption about bree and i was right, so the ending wasn’t a big shock for me. still u didn’t like it. at all
