Writing was mostly dialogue. Read like an unfinished fan fiction.

Okay so I don’t know how to rate this book? Cause like, I related sooooooo hard to some parts of the main character and I was like!!!!! Finally!!!! Can I get some answers? (Not about the questioning part, but the asexual tendencies Because like, meeee, But also like, am I Some kind of demisexual person? I don’t knoooow????) But then I never really did and I felt like the main character didn’t either and I would’ve really liked some kind of resolution? Because I need a resolution! I need to know what this is all about and he needed to know that too but we both??? Like??? Got nothing?? Please tell me if I missed something? But what is this called? Is there a label? Or is that the whole thing? But I want a label? I need one, if only to explain it to myself and to know that I’m not alone? Ugh. I got so excited! I related so freaking hard! I though: OMG finally! Finally I will know what’s up with me! But then to get nothing? It makes me both happy to feel like I’m not alone but also disappointed because it felt like he was just as confused as I was at the end??? Hmmmmm. Conflicted!

I didn’t like the manipulation and the fact that he never really told Dave how he felt when they had sex? Why didn’t he ever tell him?? It felt like This book needed to be longer Because it left of without them having that talk? He just talked to other people about it and I didn’t like that.

This book was fine for a while but I’m just not into it enough to keep reading when there’s a bunch of other books in more excited to read. I may pick it up again in the future but I’m not making any promises.

*edit - dropping to a two star, Nandan is such a dick*

Thankyou to Edelweis and HarperTeen for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not sure what I was expecting but I wasn't quite expecting this.

I think the book does well in capturing what it's like growing up queer - worrying about labels and how you fit in. There's a great cast of characters with different backgrounds and sexualities in this book so you might find a character that you relate to.

I really liked Dave and some of the other characters but Nandan was just a dick, plain and simple, throughout the entire book. He treated Dave horribly plus used other people around him.

The writing style wasn't the best for me - the pacing was a little off, it was a bit too fast paced in places plus the ending was very abrupt.

Overall, a good coming of age story which I felt was an important read especially for us queer kids.

TW/CW: the book does deal with things like gay jokes/sterotypes and a little homophobia - so be aware of these as they affected me.

Such a terribly toxic book for LQBTQIA teens. I will never recommend it to my teens. MC is so manipulative and only wants to be queer for attention. I wanted to put this book down so many times but felt I needed to finish it to form a fair opinion.

DNF - page 96

When I read the synopsis for this book I was very excited to pick it up. A decent amount of LGBTQ fiction involves fairytale romances where everything magically works out in the end (which I love!) and so I was excited to read a book that addressed the struggle of teenager figuring themselves out.

And a struggle it was.

There are loads of reviews on both sides of the fence talking about the depiction of teenagers and sexuality, condemning or defending the actions of the main character, and everything in between. This is not that review. I can honestly say I did not read enough of the book to know what the author did well or not.

What I did know by the time I put it down was that the main character was incredibly flat. There’s a lot of talk about things he doesn’t like but no actual exploration of who he is or why he thinks he might be gay other than the fact he’s wondered what sex with a guy might be like. He gives no actual indication that he’s interested in men (apart from the initial encounter which he didn’t enjoy and calling dudes attractive).

I was on the fence for a while trying to decide whether to continue or not, to see how the story unfolded, when I realized I didn’t actually care what happened.

I gave it two stars for its occasionally cringey encounters, poor setup, and lack of character development. There’s a lot of potential but I was disappointed by the disconnect and think the actual narrative could have been better.

I really wanted to like this but it was just uncomfortable to listen to.

While it is important to show characters questioning their sexuality and how confusing that can be and I can appreciate that this is what the book was trying to do I just didn’t connect with the story or the characters.

I also didn’t particularly like the writing style. I’m saying this though, despite all the negative reviews on this book I believe people should still give it a chance if it sounds interesting to them because they may end up enjoying it.

I am so confused. I have no idea if this book actually went anywhere or did anything. All the characters seem to be in the same place they were at the start of the novel, and there is no chemistry whatsoever between the main couple. Everything that happens comes out of nowhere. It seems like absolutely nothing happens, and there is no plot development. None of the characters are likeable or enjoyable to read about. Hopefully, I won't be sucked into reading books like this because of pretty covers ever again.
