Demon Copperhead is one of the best books I have ever read. Demon's precocious, strong willed voice is so unique and well formed. The book covers so many heavy topics, primarily the opioid epidemic and life as a foster child. That being said, it wasn't all doom and gloom. I found the inner monologue so sad, Demon believes that bad things happen to him because of who he is. I've never wanted to reach out and hug a book character so badly. It's been said 103772823 times, but the audiobook is wonderful.

Some parts were a little too on-the-nose and explanatory, and the ending was a little bit too neat, but overall a beautiful and moving exploration of addiction, poverty, and resilience in Appalachia.

This book will be an all-timer for me. My goodness. Kingsolver's ability to inhabit this narrator is absolutely astounding, especially given the narrative voices she's used in her other books. The absolute precious care that each person in this story was treated with through Demon's eyes will stay with me forever. Struggling with them through poverty, homelessness, addiction, but still experiencing the immense joy is such a visceral experience. I could go on and on. This book was a gift!
Graphic: Addiction, Grief, and Drug use
Moderate: Alcoholism, Child death, Classism, Cursing, Death, Drug abuse, Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, Death of parent, and Domestic abuse

This is one of my top reads for the year, which is a feat considering it’s mid-December and there have been a lot of books to compete with. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book but it had me on the edge of my seat reading it and I felt my stomach drop at the stressful parts which I always love when a book can make me feel so much for fictional characters.
