Feyre is pretty dumb

hooked & cannot wait to crush this series

if i could give it no stars i would. sorry but this wasn't for me and i dnf'd it after chapter 5, sorry life's to short and this book was so dry I'm quite sure there's more water in the desert.

Overall, this was a solid first book. This was not my first foray into the Maasverse so I had a good idea of what to expect.

Feyre is an underdog of a protagonist. She's hard-working, empathetic, and loyal to a fault - something the other characters take advantage of frequently. Having gone through hard times and not just survived but bounced back stronger, Feyre is an easy character to cheer for. She steals the spotlight in this book with her quick thinking and daring plans. Because of the pacing and length of this book, it made sense to me that Feyre was the primary focus and I think if more time was given to develop side characters that would have detracted from the overall flow of the story being told. That being said, I hope to see more of certain side characters in the sequels (cough cough Lucien and Alis cough cough).

I have mixed feelings towards Tamlin, our beast in this twisted Beauty and the Beast retelling. Although he isn't necessarily a bad guy, the lens we see him through doesn't paint him in the best light. He starts as kind, caring, and a bit awkward at the beginning of the book. He is good to Feyre and even encourages her to paint - a hobby she was forced to drop when her family fell on hard times. However as the story progresses and the stakes get higher and higher, he allows himself to be ruled by his fear and this leads him to make choices that undermine both Feyre's autonomy and intelligence. That being said I do empathize with his situation. He came into a position of authority with nobody to guide him and made mistakes because of it. He also unfortunately ends up in some no-win situations where any action he took might have gotten his loved ones killed and his inaction made him look like a coward. As far as characters go, he's not my favourite and I don't think he and Feyre are a good fit for one another. By the end of the book, too many things had driven them apart, and I can't really see how they're going to come back from it.

The pacing was good overall. In the traditional Maas style, things really ratchet up in the last 100 pages and there are twists and turns galore. Maas has always written very character-driven stories and I felt like ACOTAR is in the same vein. The plot and world act as a backdrop and the characters are the real stars of the show. The worldbuilding is okay so far - I have a lot of questions and not very many answers but at this point in the game but that's fairly standard fare.

In the second book, I'm hoping to see more of the courts of Prythian expanded on and potentially more regarding Fae-human relations. Knowing that ACOTAR takes place in the same multiverse as Throne of Glass and Crescent City, I'm interested to see the parallels between the magic systems of the three worlds as well.

3.5 ✰

(didn't find any quote interesting enough in this one)

It was a very solid book with many descriptions, I like Sarah's writing. I can visualize everything, like I'm there in the same place living in the same moment. Feyre was an interesting female main character, I love her personality. I don't know why I don't like Tamlin, I just don't understand some of his choices. It's not a thing of "omg I hate him", it's more like "he is very weird and suspicious, but I don't dislike him". I like Nesta, she was annoying at the beginning but then I started to feel very close to her in a way. It's not a 4-star or a 5-star for me because everything started to happen in the last 100 pages, the rest was just a lot of context and description. I loved the last pages, I felt everything in my skin and that's why this book cannot be just a 3-star, it has to be a little bit more. I'm very curious about the next books, and for sure I'm going to keep reading this series.

Couldn't finish it. I know a lot of people that love this series, but it wasn't for me.

really really enjoyed this. i’d been avoiding it for some time but when i finally read it i was pleasantly surprised. it swept me away with its lush worldbuilding. i loved the blend of beauty and danger in prythian, and feyre’s journey from survival to courage kept me hooked. while it didn’t quite hit perfection for me, it delivered an immersive and emotional escape full of magic and tension. <3

has she ever written a bad book?
