Joining is a really fun and lighthearted read. I always enjoy breaking out this book and revisiting the story of Milisant and Wulfric. However, it's slightly superficial when you really get down to thinking about the details. So even though I really like this book, I'm going to give it a 3 star rating.
Milisant and Wulfric have been engaged since Milisant was born. However, the betrothed couple aren't happy about it. Because of a childhood accident, which they both blame the other for, they've avoided coming into contact with each other for 7 years. But their parents have had enough and force the couple to come together and follow through with the contract. Milisant however, convinces her father to give her a month to get to know Wulfric in order to try to find a way out of their impending marriage. During this time, several attempts are made on Milisant's life, forcing her under Wulfric's constant protection and into his constant presence. Before long, neither one of them are trying quite so hard to find a way out.
I don't typically enjoy books that are set in medieval times. I think I'm more of a Victorian era kind of gal. However, Johanna Lindsey is fantastic at wrapping you up in the characters world and making you laugh, cry, get angry, and want to fight whatever foes are in between the characters finding their happily ever after. She's an expert at spinning tales. The way she wrote the novel, in that medieval language verbiage, made the story even more beautiful and it surprisingly never distracted me from what was happening to the characters, which I have had occur before. Although I can't say this is my favorite novel by Johanna Lindsey, I can't say I regret buying it or having read it a few times either.
I did like the murder plot involved, especially since it included King John (brother of Richard the Lionheart). That was a pretty intriguing situation and I also like the attitude of the leader of the mercenaries because of his heartlessness - he makes it so easy to hate him. The attempts on her kidnapping and/or death really drove the story along because it hindered Milisant from going anywhere she wanted, thus forcing her into more contact with Wulfric.
What I didn't like about this novel is that the characters fall in love extremely fast. They've been betrothed for years but because of a childhood incident, have hated each other for quite awhile now. Then, when Wulfric finally comes to collect his bride (several years past the time when he should've come for her) they're both given a month to get to know each other before the wedding ceremony takes place. During that month, they spend about 2 weeks of that avoiding each other at all costs. So really, they fall in love after 2 weeks of really spending any time at all together. And I'm sorry to say, I'm an incredible skeptic when it comes to love at first sight - or love in 2 weeks either for that matter. It was kind of a buzz kill when I realized how little they knew each other.

Milisant and Wulfric have been betrothed since Milisant was born. After a horrible first encounter as children, neither one is interested in marrying the other. When Wulfric’s father reminds him of his duty, he goes to collect his bride. Milisant will do anything to get out of marrying Wulf, so she gets her father to agree to allow a month of “get to know you” time. To make matters complicated, it quickly becomes apparent that someone is trying to murder Milisant!
This book was really hard for me to get into. This could be due to a combination of pandemic brain and my child demanding I entertain her at every moment, so I will probably try to re-read it at some point! I liked the enemies to lovers aspect and I really liked that we saw both Mili and Wulf’s aspect of their first encounter. Neither one of them were wrong per say, it was just a big misunderstanding! I got frustrated with Mili throughout the book, because I knew (as the reader) that Wulf was not a bad guy. She just needed to give him a chance! But she’s 18, stubborn, and about to be forced into marriage, so who wouldn’t act like she did?! Overall, this was not my favorite Lindsey, but it was still good!

This book was alright. Johanna Lindsey is a pretty good writer, and the characters and atmosphere are well formed. But unfortunately, Milisant is one of the most grating, abrasive, and annoying heroines I've ever come across. She is completely unlikeable, completely anachronistic, ridiculous, and I wanted to smack her all the way through. Couldn't understand for a moment why Wulfric would ever want to marry such an annoying little shrew. She wasn't cute, she wasn't spunky, she was ~obnoxious. And rather ruined my liking of the story.
This was a cute story and an easy read. The writing was good and I like most of the characters, but the male lead, I had problems with him. I don't like his possessiveness towards the female protagonist, but that's just a personal preference.

Kinda fun.
3.5/5 stars
Unfortunately I didn't absolutely love my first Johanna Lindsay. I found the hero demanding and the heroine annoying. However, it did keep me engaged and I was interested to see how the story would resolve. I'm finding medieval romance isn't really my thing, in general.

I didn't see love at first sight other reviews are talking about. He was arrogant and barely listened to her, I know it was a different time but he irritated me no end. The term 'wench' when he was annoyed particularly irked me.
Not impressed.

Johanna Lindsey was my go-to-girl back in high school when I still read romances. I gave up reading romance a long time ago, mostly because I felt embarrassed buying them (I know, it's stupid and I'm trying to get over that). But I do keep up with Lindsey, but either I never read this one, or I just completely forgot it, so I picked it up at the library yesterday when I was looking for her latest Malory novel.
Not a huge fan of this novel as I found the heroine very annoying. Wulfric was hot enough, and of course Melisant eventually grows up a bit, but not my favorite Lindsey novel by a long shot.
