Wow! This sounded quite unpromising. A young woman in NY tries to sleep for a year by taking loads of psychiatric drugs. But it was sharp, savage and funny, and then finally, at the last minute, beautiful.

3.5 rounded down to 3. I love Ottessa Moshfegh's style and this is no exception, it's just that Eileen is damn near perfect so I can't rate this one the same. This narrator is interesting, the premise is interesting, not sure how I feel about the ending, but overall definitely enjoyed this.

Opening Line: Whenever I woke up, night or day, I’d shuffle through the bright marble foyer of my building and go up the block and around the corner where there was a bodega that never closed.

Ottessa Moshfegh is one book away from being classed among my all time favorite authors. This book was so different from DEATH IN HER HANDS, but it still pressed all the right buttons for me. It was weird and melancholic and wonderful and despicable all at once.
