After reading other reviews I almost didn’t finish this but am so glad I did. Is some of the writing less than refined? Yes. Does the plot remind one of another? Also yes. But it picks up midway and is a solid effort. It will likely never make my favorites list but if you’re curious, go for it. Also - The audiobook has some delightful musical additions.
I had no idea who this author was before I started reading the book. I doubt I will learn more after reading this book. What an absolute waste of my time. It is still pretty rare for me to quit reading a book but 146 is the number of pages I made it through here. This book is nothing more than a bunch of gibberish, disorganized pointless prattling and frankly that's being kind.
So I think that many people are writing scathing reviews without considering context instead of content. Part I is very much like Catcher in the Rye and Part 2 is more like Fight Club. This is clearly a meta text meant to be in the style of Postmodern lit. I read half and listened to the audio for half. What I can say is that this is the voice of Gen Z and I can respect that. I am torn; however, by the depiction of schizophrenia. I think the panic attack episode is impeccably done and I give props to any writer who brings to light what living with mental health issues is like.I just...did the doctor really not see this individual needed much more help? I feel like Red’s character wasn’t given enough context or support but I recognized him for what he was after the first chess game.
Did not enjoy writing style or pace. Could pick up on the Fight Club vibes early which takes away from the story.
Spoiler alert.
A young adult Fight Club is the best way I can describe this book.

This book had me umming and awing at every page. Not because the writing was so special, but because it was simple in nature; in a good way, telling you a story about a troubled character. A character you didn't realize was so troubled, till you reached the climax of the book. This climax makes you rethink everything you just read and makes a second read of this book so different as well.
Part one was a little hard to get through. I couldn't really figure out what the purpose was and was only reading one chapter at a time. I finally got to part two and I couldn't put it down. I finished it all right then. It was a creative twist that kept that pages turning, and that's what I look for.
I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. It reads like it thinks it's smarter than it is, and much smarter than the reader, which comes across as patronising at first and finally a little stupid.
