Really about a 3.5

For this book I was really going in thinking that I wouldn’t like it but I actually didn’t mind it. I felt people were pretty harsh on it. It’s not great but I cut it some slack since it was Hall’s 1st book. The overall concept was interesting. Although I did feel it was fairly predictable. The twist came in part two which I was not expecting and actually enjoyed it. If you can get past the subpar writing I think that this book would be alright.

As far as I can tell, this is Bobby Hall's first novel. His storytelling style is fun and loose, but often too basic. I did not hate it, but I also did not walk away happy. I felt like I knew the plot from the beginning and the author did not offer me any meat to really sink my teeth into. The characters were very one-dimensional and stereotypical.

Spoiler
This felt like a mishmash of Fight Club and Shutter Island. This storyline has been done before and better executed. The author did have a very important message to tell, but it was an endnote to the story. This seemed genuine and heartfelt and really tied the story together. But as honest and powerful as that statement was, the story came off as an awkward PSA. I want to hear more from this author, I think he can definitely improve from here.

Supermarket is possibly one of the worst books I've ever read. Like, it's actively bad, to the point where I was literally rolling my eyes and laughing at lines from the book, something I never do while reading. It's a self-indulgent mess bred from the author's privilege and wealth and brings nothing of value to the reader. It's a slovenly, amateurish, half-baked fantasy that should have never reached the page.

I'm sure Logic is a nice guy and that he's been through a lot, so I don't want to be too hard, but it's clear that he needs someone to say no once in a while, because this is definitely a project that needed some interjection. By his own admission he's not a writer of prose, he never graduated high school and in the narrative (as I'm sure the main character is a projection of him) he even admits he has little admiration for the medium of fiction. It's almost like he's mocking the thing he's doing.

The book tells the story of a 20-something white kid who magically gets a book deal without even an idea and decides to base it on a mundane life working at a supermarket, only things aren't really as they appear. There are some passable notions about mental health that I suppose are interesting, but the book doesn't really have anything to say other than maybe the fact that Logic seems to want to be some sort of movie or action star. The whole thing is a confusing mess.

It reminds me a little of "Cherry", but at least in that case I believed that Nico Walker had an actual interesting story to tell about the military, addiction and PTSD, and perhaps that was the easiest way to get it on paper so that they can make a movie out of it or whatever. This, on the other hand, is just a weird fantasy that should have stayed in the author's head.

I only read to about halfway when it became too painful to continue. Reads like a fan-fiction written by a teenager who just watched Fight Club for the first time. I'm not 14 and this is not deep.

The first half of this book was amazing and really had me hooked but I was a bit disappointed by the second half. The book had a Vonnegut "Timequake" kind of vibe to it, but I think where is missed the mark was explaining too much to the reader in the second half. I felt a little patronized, tbh. I think that there was a bit of wasted potential with an unreliable narrator. That being said, it was a very clever and entertaining read and pretty good for a debut novel.

Based on the negative reviews, I suspect this is a book that works much, much better in audio form. I listened to it primarily while walking the dog and cleaning house and it was pretty good— an interesting premise, good pacing, easy to follow in audio form.

This book was interesting and fun to read. It was quick. I read it and finished because I respect Logic as a rapper. I enjoyed the ride but it was a bit simplistic in its writing which is likely because Bobby is a new author. I would give his other works a try!

I can't decide how I feel about this book. The plot was original but contrived at the same time. Same with the main character, Flynn. The whole thing felt like it was trying hard to be better than it was. What it needed most was some vocabulary. I know Flynn wasn't supposed to be the brightest, but it was challenging to read at the 3rd-grade level. Regardless, I'm sure someone will turn this into a big hit movie and no one will care.

I actually enjoyed the book. I really wouldn’t put this book under the suspenseful genre but I would say the story develops over time.

I liked the main characters but character development was lacking for everyone except Flynn. The story goes from Flynn meeting Mia, dating Mia, they hang out a few nights, Flynn has a mental break, comes to two years later and Mia is still there. Why? How? The characters maybe date a couple of weeks...I’ll say a month and Mia sticks around. That’s probably my only major issue.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and the knowledge it gave me. I didn’t know much about schizophrenia and when I would see or read about it I couldn’t picture people really living with the disease, but the book helped me to understand and empathize.

An interesting concept but poor execution. The writing felt clunky and out of place and the character descriptions felt more like a list of stereotypes more than anything else. The twist was guessed almost immediately.
