I'm just glad 0 stars is an option. My loving friend recommended this book to me and made me fully aware that it was probably not going to be the best read but I was not at all expecting just how bad it would be. The writing reads like this was a 9th grader's school writing project and he'd just spent the night watching Fight Club for inspiration -- and that might honestly be giving it too much credit. For being a mixed man, Bobby Hall certainly writes like someone who only views people of color (and women) as tropes. The plot, if one could call it that, was loosely strung together at best. I'm no author, but this just really missed the mark.
medium-paced

This was just really, really not great writing or storytelling. Surprisingly flat characters and some racist moments had me pretty disappointed. If you're looking at it from a Catcher in the Rye perspective, maybe there are pieces to enjoy here, but I recommend giving time and energy to other writers instead.

3.5 stars. It was a worthwhile read

Well this book was NOT what I expected. I'll be honest, I didn't love it. I didn't think the writing was very good, but I also wasn't SURPRISED that the writing wasn't very good (mostly because I read parts of a couple of reviews before jumping in and because writing a novel is SO different from writing raps). The dialogue is really stilted and there's a lot of repetition--something the reader learns is mentioned again a couple pages later in almost exactly the same way, almost as if Bobby Hall revised certain pages but didn't read the story over to catch those repetitions. Or his editor didn't read it over. Or his editor didn't care.

I think this is a book that angsty teenage boys will really like. I'm not sure that I was a big fan of the mental illness representation, but I believe that it came from someone who has experienced a breakdown and recovery. I'm just not sure that it was portrayed in the most productive way? But I think it's really great that such a big celebrity like Logic put out a story with a character who sinks into and overcomes a severe mental illness (but isn't "magically" healed).
