I bought this because I’ve worked in a supermarket and thought that a black comedy about the retail experience would be really good, but that isn’t what this book is at all. This is more like hipster Fight Club. I finished it, because it was easy to read and crazy shit never stopped happening, but it wasn’t a very good experience and I would recommend it at all.

I might recommend to 13 year olds but no one else. The writing was so terrible and tbh it was a lazy portrayal of serious mental illness

zero zero zero. i read this book at one of the lowest points in my life and it only served to drag me down lower. the most god awful, ruthlessly and unrelenting stuck up its own ass books i have ever read in my entire life. i genuinely credit this book as something that ruined a good 1-2 years of my life. every time i think about it, a little part of me dies and i come that much closer to meeting my end. Do not read this book.
The idea had some promise, but this was, without a doubt, the most poorly written book I’ve ever read. It honestly felt like I was reading 250 pages of a poorly written student narrative. The book is about an author writing a book, and the narrator frequently goes on these tirades about how most literature is boring and he’s going to break all these conventions because he’s more edgy and interesting... Ok. We get it. But it doesn’t work.
However, one of my students said it’s the only book she’s read cover to cover, so clearly this book is doing something right. Even if that something right is that it was written by Logic. :)

I’m a Logic fan so like others I was excited to read his debut novel ... until I started reading it that is. I started it on 2 day trip and read it in between multiple layovers. By the end of first day I wished I’d brought a different book to pass time. This book could have easily been categorized as YA. I think people that normally don’t like reading would enjoy this because the writing is so bad (punctuation, grammar, the constant inner monologues, slang, the obsession with chasing after girls, the overwhelming use of pop culture references ... I could go on ...). The overall message was a positive one but perhaps Logic should consider a ghostwriter next time around to convey his thoughts and message a bit better for his fans that read on a regular basis ... or that aren’t 14-18 year old boys.
I appreciated the heart that went into this book, it felt like a passion project and I was engaged from the first page to the end. Having a soundtrack to the novel was also a really cool idea, and I liked listening to that intermittently as I was reading.
However, there were some major elements of the books that I felt could be improved. The twists were pretty predictable for me, and I wish those plot points would have been developed more. I mean the back of the books references Fight Club, how much more is there to say? Also, a lot of the writing is really on the nose. A lot of the monologues had me wondering how they got through the editing process, and the dialogue felt bland at times.
But overall, it was an interesting read, and hope to see more from this author as they continue to develop as a writer.
