I didn’t know what to expect from this one when I randomly picked it up at the library because I liked the cover but I’m so glad I did! I feel like I haven’t read a book like this and that makes it even more special. Plus the writing style, initially I couldn’t get into it but once I did I just wanted to keep reading and see what happened.

Since everyone is sharing how much they love Logic and that's what made them so excited to read this, I think it's only right that I tell you I have no idea who Logic is (I've pieced together from your reviews he's a hip-hop artist?). I didn't go into this book with excitement because of Logic. I went into this book intrigued because the last line of the summary says, "Who knew you could find sex, drugs, and murder all in aisle nine?"
Come on, as far as last sentence summaries go that's pretty good.
Anyway, I completed this book in audiobook form- I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much in a physical copy. But, the audiobook is like a presentation. Like a show, and I rather enjoyed all of that. The narration made me laugh and I was relatively amused for most of the book.
This book is about a guy named Flynn who is trying to get a book published. He gets so immersed in his story and the characters that actually drives himself crazy. The ending of part 1 had me on the edge of my seat. (The fucking dog, man. The dog. I still can't even.) And, the beginning of part two brought everything together for me relatively neatly. But then the rest of the second half was just so-so for me. The "Coffee, Coffee, Coffee" guy aka Joe was one of my favorite patients/ hallucentions (cause honestly, whose even real anymore?) Obviously, I was curious just how this was going to end but I wasn't itching for the ending of part 2/the whole story like I had been during part 1.
<Slight & Sparse Spoiling Ahead> After listening to the acknowledgements though and finding out that it Hall really did take a two year gap between part 1 & 2, I think, sheds some light on how the first part felt more addictive than the second half. Also, the Red twist didn't surprise me. And, I was completely befuddled by how long it took Flynn to realize he should fucking be taking his meds- pill aversion or not. The epilogue didn't feel completely believable in my opinion but I don't know that I ever really gave Flynn and Mia any real credit. What I didn't expect was the actual ending, with the waiter. That was a nice touch.

"People always say things like Well I would, but ... and that's where they fuck up. As soon as they give a reason for why they can't do something, they're already defeated."
Honestly not as bad as expected, it does have a lot of clichés but i actually enjoyed the character's perception of life.
I LOVED this book. This book read so quickly and I was interested the whole time. It starts in a grocery store and Flynn is living a completely normal life struggling for inspiration to write a novel. I love the twist in the middle. The whole second half of the book was written well but it was so interesting. It really felt like I was inside Flynn’s head as he was battling Frank and trying to get his life back. This is truly unlike any book I have read before and I loved it.
Would be zero stars if that were possible. I have a very hard time saying that this was the worst book I’ve ever read, because it sounds overly dramatic. But I truly think this WAS the worst book I’ve ever read.
The story itself and the “twist” was obvious very early on. At first I thought it was done that way on purpose. But in later chapters, those plot points were explained in such a way that it was apparent that the author thought he had been fooling his readers the whole time.
On top of that, it’s wholly unoriginal. It’s an attempt to rip off Fight Club. An attempt that fails spectacularly.
The writing itself is painfully bad. I have to wonder if an editor ever saw this book before it was printed. It’s... like I said, painful. I physically cringed several times while reading.
For example, two lines from the book.... “The fall ended in extreme blunt trauma. It was such an enormous blow that the chemicals in my brain balanced out in real time.” As if a chemical imbalance is literally chemicals that aren’t evenly balanced in the brain, and a physical jolt could knock some chemicals from one side to the other, evening things out. It would be laughable if it was the only example of wildly terrible writing. But the whole entire book is this awful.
I don’t write reviews for the books I read (good or bad) because I’m not a writer and I don’t feel qualified to critique someone else’s work. But I found this particular book so terrible, that here I am. I also usually donate the books I’ve finished... but I will take great pleasure in tossing this book directly in the trash. Please. Save yourself. Spend your valuable money and time on another book. Any book. Just not this one.
