DID NOT FINISH: 5%

I have OCD and one of my issues is with bed bugs but I've really worked on this with therapy - in the first few pages of the book it was obvious that the main character also had this issue and I could feel the spiral starting so I dnf'd before the spiral continued

Omg!!! This was totally amazing! I was engrossed in this from start to finish!!! Everyone hates bedbugs right??? lol! Can someone just stick a fork in Mari’s stepdad please…so over him! The story was very believable though the ending left me wanting more! So is there going to be a part 2????? The vocal performance of the audiobook was great too!

WOW, this was so good! I did not expect to love it so much, since I've never really read horror. But wow, it was spooky, and shocking, and it touched on so many beautiful themes, and that ending... I'm just blown away and humbled actually. I 100% need to read more of this author and I think that many people would enjoy this. It takes all the common tropes of horror—or what I assume to be the common tropes—and totally flips them on their heads, which is one of my favorite things. Such a pleasant surprise.

Such a scary book! Great suspense and freaky imagery. Main character suffers from anxiety and there were some great scenes exploring anxiety attacks and the perils of self-medicating with drugs and alcohol. I didn't love the main character's inner dialogue...sometimes jarring language, but it's possible it's just a realistic teen dialogue and I am old. Discussions of racial and socio-economic red-lining and propagating violence and hatred by those in power. Also issues of newly blended families and interracial tensions within that. Impacts of food allergies.

Just lots going on. Still a good horror novel. Lots of triggers...drug abuse, violence, death of family members, language,
