This book is a 3.5, not really a 3 and not really a 4, overall good book. Quick read because of how it pulled me in / how bad I wanted to know how it ended. Had some triggering points for some people so not for everyone. Wouldn’t REALLY recommend but a good “fun” read

Not a single good thing about this one, sorry to say.
This book sets itself up as another twisty psychological thriller, similar to [b:Gone Girl|19288043|Gone Girl|Gillian Flynn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1397056917s/19288043.jpg|13306276]. Of course it happens to not be like that at all. There is no mystery, no thriller aspect, and all the characters are as one-dimension as possible. There is barely anything interesting in here and just a huge waste of time. It was insanely boring and I'm not even sure what the author was trying to do here; the story was pointless.
Reading about Ani and her past and present was actually awful. Ani is such a shitty person who judges everyone for no reason, and even seeing all the bad things that happened in her past doesn't give me a shred of sympathy for this annoying and awful woman. Sure you can say that Ani being awful is the point and I'll agree with you but Ani wasn't done well at all. I've felt for awful characters- even murdering ones but Ani? Nah, she can choke.
Ani's past is ridiculously tragic, with one bad thing happening after another and another. By the end it reached a point of being just so fake. The fact that it all happened to a bunch of 14 year olds just made it more dumb. Wow! Such horrible things happening to kids!
Everything was so boring. Please at least be entertaining but this was dull city and I don't know why or even how I sat through the entire thing. Maybe I thought there would be something to save it in the end but no. It just ends super unsatisfying, reminding me that I really did waste so much time on a story that gave me nothing in return.

This is a weird little book that I didn't exactly enjoy (until I'd finished it). I was expecting a fast paced thriller a la "Girl on the Train" etc. but this is something quite different. I didn't know where this was going at all but not in a twisty turny exciting way, more in a I'm-not-sure-this-is-worth-it way. It was worth it, actually. I have many, many thoughts about this and may add some in once I've let it stew in my brain for a while.
I don't know how to rate this one, I mostly liked the flashbacks to Ani's high school days and the ending worked for me. But to get to that point I had to read through so much bodybashing and constant references to "dieting" and disordered eating that often made me physically cringe; I didn't think it was well done. Perhaps that was the author's intention (to show link between trauma and body image issues?) but even if so, I hated reading about it, sorry! However, I'd try another of the author's books, I didn't mind her writing style, and I think she has worthwhile things to say about violence against women and other forms of misogyny.
