Its fineeeeeee. Just fine. Felt like the author was keeping the trauma event a secret for dramatic effect, but the effect was more that I just didn’t care about the MC until half way through.

This book did not go at all where I was expecting. I think I expected a Gone Girl style twist, but instead it was just a slow unraveling of a character's background, which goes a long way to explain how she is today. I didn't dislike this concept, but I hate that I had other expectations. Ani is a very harsh character and I can see many people not liking her, but somehow she came off as real and honest to me and I didn't hate her. I didn't exactly like her, but she was compelling to say the least.

My one complaint is that I felt like her relationship with her fiance was so obviously wrong that it took all of the drama out of the situation and left her looking like a gold digger for most of the book. But perhaps I am missing the point. Maybe this is the kind of guy Ani would marry and the kind of life she would want, but not the life or man Tifani would choose. Either way, I doubt anyone reading the book thought she would end up with him.

Recommended for people who like a little edge in their characters.

I’m giving 4 stars because I couldn’t put it down, but I felt like something was missing from the ended. Overall I was highly invested in Ani as a character and could feel raw emotions that come with being a teenager.

A great exploration of how the tiniest of straws can be the one that breaks the camel's back. Very compelling narrative structure that alternates between the main character's teen and twenty-something years, driving home the lasting effects of ... Oh, I can't say. That would be a spoiler. You'll have to find out for yourself. Put on your seatbelt.
