If I didn't love the characters so much, I'd be mad about the ending - it was almost too neat. However, considering the rest of the novel/duology, they needed it. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives, when I wasn't screaming at the storyline for literally ripping my heart out.

Despite feeling invested in the overall story I just somehow got less and less engaged and invested in what happened to the characters. Lots of promise but needed editing.
"Some people fear the fire, some become it."
I honestly don't know how I feel about this book. It was so sad. My heart wasn't prepared for the emotional roller coater I just got off.
I will say I hated the Kirisi chapters up until maybe the last 10%. I just didn't love her storyline. I found it mostly boring and missed everything just being from Raven's perspective. I also wished to have Bastian's perspective.
Speaking of Bastian, he was the very BEST character in his book. The author did a PERFECT job of morally gray. I have never read a morally gray character that works as well as he does. He was still good, but also, you know he would torture and maim and kill anyone who hurt Raven. His undying love for her was so so perfect.
I also fucking knew Bastian and Gray were the same person. I fucking knew it. I am never able to figure things out but this must've been super obvious because I saw it coming. Raven also forgave him way too easily. The guy literally led you to believe Bastian was dead for days. Not only that he was dead, but that you killed him. She was ill and hurt and punishing herself for a crime she literally did not commit. She had so much guilt over that and Kirisi coming back from the dead. Honestly, this entire book was a really bad time for Raven.
I did feel like the book drug just a tiny bit. I also wish the whole, reconnecting the book thing was better explained. Like why the hell did she have to die for something she had no power over? Her goodbyes to Bastian had me in tears. I couldn't handle her pain, his pain. It was too much! But then the witches became shifters and the shifters witches. Then Raven just looses all her powers?? I was so so mad. I'm glad she got them back in the end. I have thrown my kindle if she ended powerless.
I'm glad Bastian and Raven finally got there happily ever after. I'm glad Kirisi came back as a living person and was able to have her life with Nym. I also appreciated the poetic justice of their shifter animal being their spirit animals form. I thought that was beautiful.
I wish we would've known more of the backstory to Atlas and Torrin. They were such loveable characters but I knew almost nothing about them.

This took me forever to slog through, literally read an entire book series in the middle of it. This felt like a totally different book than the first. I hated the multiple point of views. I felt like all the dynamics shifted. Gone was Kirsi and Ravens amazing friendship. I felt like Raven and Bastian’s relationship vanished as well. I found the plot of the first book much more interesting.
The end of this book wrecked me in the best way possible. Broke my heart and mended it back together.
