This was a pretty good book, not my favorite. The beginning really roped me in but it dragged once he got to the island. I did like the use of real photographs; that was an interesting twist.

Beyond anything I expected. The weird photos add to the dark moodiness of the book. I'm really looking forward to the sequel!

Peculiar Indeed! I enjoyed this book very much. It was different then anything I've read in a while, Jacob was a down to earth and very relatable character. I thought the pictures were amazing and I loved that each peculiar child had such a unique ability. I loved the small yet significant mystery throughout the book, and enjoyed learning the answers to Jacobs and my questions piece by piece. I'm really excited to read the next book!!

One of my favourites. Can't wait until Riggs makes the sequel.

When I first picked up this book, I was worried it was going to be derivative of Harry Potter but the story and the photographs included are certainly unique. I rather enjoyed this one. My only criticism is I felt that Jacob's vocabulary was a bit too advanced for someone who is only 15 years old. Other than that, I found it to be a rather solid book and will be checking out the sequel.

This book was not at all what I thought it was going to be - in a totally awesome way. Ransom Riggs is a fabulous writer and the plot was fast-paced. I loved the constant mystery and the lovely twists. The magic of it all was awesome. Can't wait for them to ruin it through the movie. I will probably go see it in theaters but I already know that it's going to be a lot different. I'll be reading the sequel soon. (Edit: the movie was super magical and accurate. Very impressed.)

This book was hard to rate for me. I was super excited to read it, hearing glowing reviews from people in person and online, and honestly captivated by the cover alone. I expected it to be darker, scarier, than it was...which it wasn't really very much at all. It took a couple chapters to get into it...which I expected from a neighbor's report...maybe 4 chapters to grab me. That was too bad...I mean 4! wasted chapters. I think in part that was the voice which I couldn't connect with. So then I become more interested and go along with the characters on their days...but I never quite feel that click, that moment when you are right there, emotionally involved in the happenings. I never feel like I just can't put the book down...almost, but not quite. Then...then, if you can believe it, I am at the end and the story is at a peak of intensity. Obviously there will be a second book or more. I wasn't expecting that either. The quirkiness and settings were wonderfully painted...the best part of the words but it was the photos that make this book...real, old photographs rescued from being lost to time but real, quirky, interesting people...one of whom wrote this book. The format itself is quite lovely too.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, one of the most fascinating and different twists about this book is the incorporation of the old photos, such as the one featured on the cover. There are additional strange and intriguing photos sprinkled throughout the book. The story itself features mystery, romance, adventure, and, of course, peculiar children. Jacob's journey leads him to discover more about his grandfather, and, through some connections that gradually become apparent, himself. The mystery introduces some mind-bending concepts surrounding the nature of the children and the house. Neat concept.
