Quick read. I love a new take on dystopian/zombie genres. I was left wanting more about the bee, pollination, pesticide backstory.
um how did this book take me 10 hours ( w lots of breaks) to read?
going into this book I had very low expectations. this book exceeded my expectations. evidence: I started this book around noon at school, and finished just before 11 at night, the same day. I loved this dystopian, dark theme. the plot and main idea for the book was really well thought out and it was genius. on a side note, I am currently in love with Bowan; sorry Fo

Non-stop action from cover to cover! Fiona wakes up in her room, in her house, but everything is changed. She has no memory of the past four years. As she runs for her life, she must figure out not only what happened but who she can trust. Other than the not so subtle anti-vaccine message, this was a great read. Recommended for grades 7 & up.
The characters ruined this for me. ALL the characters. I did not like any of the characters and can't choose who I dislike the most. The amount of times I wanted to fling my book across the room is unbelievable. I wanted to rip my hair out of frustration with Fiona's decisions. For a girl with a military father she knows nothing and has no instincts or gut feelings. Everyone is hormone crazed, including her. Like the whole time I was screaming at her to get her priorities set straight. I knew I would not like her from the beginning when she slammed the bathroom door when she was hiding from her beast twin. Like girl what the fuck they know where ur hiding now. U could have bought urself like 2 extra minutes to get away and those 2 minutes could have changed everything. And she kept making stupid decisions. She trusts and falls in love with someone who abused her and would kill her easily WHY DOES SHE WANNA TRUST BOWEN? BECAUSE HE'S PRETTY? LIKE GIRL CONTROL UR HORMONES. U GONNA DIE. when she hears noises she doesn't even care to mention it bowen who even tho is awful would use that info correctly and try to get to safety. I mean she hears someone trying to get inside her safe warehouse and she just goes to sleep. She wants to feel pretty and girly EVEN THO SHE'S TOLD LIKE 7 TIMES THAT LOOKING LIKE THAT WILL GET HER RAPED AND MURDERED OR SOLD OFF AND RAPED REPEATEDLY. CAN I JUST ASK WHY SHE COMPLETELY FORGETS ABOUT HER FAMILY WHOM ARE GONE AND DEAD AND CRAZY AND INSTEAD KEEPS TRYING TO MAKE OUT WITH BOWEN OR FEEL PRETTY. LIKE OTHER THAN JUST CRYING ONCE OVER HER DEAD PARENTS SHE DOESN'T THINK ABOUT THEM AT ALL. we don't even get to see if she is trying to push that info away from her mind in order not to hurt but the only thing in her head is FUCKING BOWEN. Like she has cried more over how bowen is scared of her and with good reason than she has over her twin who has turned into a beast or her dead parents. Even Bowen says his nightmares about his dead mother was better than some stupid nightmare where Fiona prolly is getting hurt or dying or some shit like really? Ur MOTHER vs some girl u had a dumb crush on? (Don't even get me started on that stupid "I teased and bullied u cuz I liked u" bullshit) okay also when bowen is leaving her in the hotel instead of crying a kissing why isn't she asking where he's going and why can't they keep moving together since staying in spot for more than a day isn't a good idea anyways and there's nothing in the hotel that they could use anyways. I swear Fiona is worse than Disney princesses like at least they have sense and don't rely 100% on their knight in shinning armor and their Knights on shinning armor are okay guys not people who abuse and tell their love they may end up raping them. Fiona puts shame on the name Fiona (I need to go see Shrek to make Fiona a better name) also can I just ask what is her deal with all the smelling? Like holy shit my poor nose man almost every other page has something she is smelling.
When the mom decides to put Jonah in coma Fiona is furious. Why? I have no clue. Clearly it's the better option than seeing ur twin turn crazier and then end up dying. And why is the mother telling her they will put her in coma as well when they already saw her violent reaction to Jonah being put in coma. They could have lied to her and did it secretly because at this point she's not thinking clearly she's already losing whatever she had left of her mind.
Moving on, during the hotel fight scene where Arrin and Fiona are trying to get away I find it stupid that they get mad at Fiona when she shoots first and asks questions later because that's what she should be doing. She hears multiple footsteps and she saw bowen and Tommy run the opposite way so of course she wouldn't know if they changed their course and came inside. Multiple footrests sound way different than just 2. So fuck them this is the only time Fiona made a proper decision even if it ended up hurting bowen. Bowen and Tommy should have known better. They knew Fiona had a gun and that she was expecting the Raiders so they should have taken precautions. WHY DOES FIONA YELL IN SITUATIONS WHERE THEY NEED TO BE QUIET. ALSO WHY THE FUCK IS FIONA KISSING HIM IN A MOMENT WHERE RAIDERS ARE RAIDING THE HOTEL LOOKING FOR THEM, THEY'RE IN PLAIN VIEW AND BOWEN IS BLEEDING OUT OF FUCKING COURSE HIS LIPS ARE GONNA BE UNRESPONSIVE. The only realistic part of this whole story is Arrin's actions and decisions. In a world like that thinking about urself is the first thing u do and u don't care about backstabbing cuz u don't know if you'll live until tomorrow. Also how is it Fiona's fault that Arrin was put into the pit that's the first dumb thing Arrin has said.
I also do not understand how Fiona's strength works? Like she used her super strength sometimes but times when she needed to help bowen or she needed to get away from the female beast beside her cage she couldn't use it? Does it come an go??
In the pit why is it that Fiona wants to give up and die not thinking about her brother at all but it takes seeing bowen to bring her spirits back? Like what the fuck where is the familial love in this story? Jonah is the only character that was interesting and that I liked and he's just pushed to the side until Fiona needs help and bowen is not there to help her. In fact the only love in this book is romantic and only between Fiona and bowen NO LOVE BETWEEN FAMILY. BOWEN WAS GONNA SHOOT HIS OWN BROTHER NOT FOR LEAVING HIS MOM AND HIM TO DIE BUT FOR TRYING TO TAKE FIONA (I mean I have nothing against Duncan dying this ass hole pitted the twins against each other and helps out with the pit but like the reason for dreyden trying to kill him should have been the leaving his mom and him to die not Fiona. And if it was gonna be Fiona could he have just left the part about the mom out so that he didn't seem like he was a heartless person who didn't care about his mom and cared only about Fiona??) AND WHEN FIONA WAKES UP HER FIRST QUESTION IS ABOUT BOWEN NOT HER BROTHER WHO LITERALLY TORE HIMSELF APART HELPING HER STAY ALIVE. LIKE WHY IS JONAH KICKED TO THE SIDE SO MUCH???
Speaking of when Fiona wakes up at the end, did her sister literally just tell her that some dude kissed her without her permission to times when she was passed out?????? What the hell??
In the end we don't even get any more info about Jonah :(
And if course it ends with the governor escaping his prison. An old guy who has some beastly powers escapes his high security prison yet Fiona who has more beastly power couldn't escape anything and couldn't fight for shit.
I think it's safe to say i liked the story but the characters made it so hard to finish the book. I don't think I'll be reading the second one. Maybe in the future when I have finished my most anticipated tbr books and I'm waiting for new releases I may come back and just finish it but I don't see that happening for a while.
The one star is for Jonah and that the writing style was okay and of course that the plot and idea for the book was good. The characters and their decisions and the convenience of some stuff happening to the point that I would say "what are the chances..." aloud were the reasons why it's missing the other 4 stars. Sorry Ms. Wiggins but this book was not for me.

Interesting play on the bee decline. Bees are genetically modified to try and help save their drastic decline, but with devastating consequences. The new venom starts a terrible flu pandemic. The vaccine that is developed winds up causing those who take it to mutate and become extremely feral and violent, with no visible shred of humanity left. The pesticide used to wipe out the new bees causes most all plant and animal life to die.
Fiona wakes to find herself in her room, but it looks like it hasn't been lived in in years. Her family is gone, the world is destitute, and her body has gone from a tween's to a woman's. Her last memory is her 13th birthday, but now she is more like 17. There is a spider-looking tattoo on her hand, but it has ten legs. As she runs into people in the world, she finds out that this is a big deal, and it's not a good one.
Well written, but obviously YA. A quick read, good pacing and action.
