Soft meditations. Slice of life reflections. Lo-fi contemporary fiction. Tokyo on slo-mo.
Yet another beautiful and thoughtful addition for any Banana Yoshimoto collection. In fact, maybe you should start here with these short stories before digging into her more complex novels?

I actually rated each individual story based on content (not style as I love Yoshimoto's style and narration) and found the average which is what I gave for my review (the average was actually 3.583 but I rounded)
Newlywed: 4
Lizard: 2.5
Helix: 3.5
Dreaming of Kimchee: 4
Blood and Water: 4
A Strange Tale from Down by the River: 3.5

As much as I wanted to like Lizard, I simply couldn’t do it.
I was enchanted by the concept of short stories that honed in on the small, curious, and beautiful moments that take place within our relationships and connections. Unfortunately, however, the writing style of the stories and lack of a secure beginning, middle, or end made it difficult to make this book memorable.
I found myself to be more focused on obsessively pinpointing the so-called “moments” in each story that made the read worthwhile, but I couldn’t find them. It felt as though I was handed a few pages from random books and was told to piece them together into something meaningful.
As somebody who has a difficult time dissecting poetry, I fear I am simply just not deep enough to find the nuances and beauty in Lizard.

A feel-good, casual book when you are not in the mood to read something extremely heavy. A couple of stories left an impact in my mind and I can see myself re-visting this every once a while. I wasn't able to finish the last story but except this one pause, I really enjoyed this small collection of pleasant tales.

Very pretty and hopeful little stories.
This was not my favorite Yoshimoto book. I do like her narrative style a lot, but I think I prefer her in novel form.
