I will fully admit that one of the reasons I enjoyed the first book so much is because I'm a sucker for a bodyguard romance and I may have let my love for the trope blind me. I really liked how protective of her he was and their traveling adventures to deliver her to her fiancé.

Unfortunately, this book didn't have the same relationship dynamic that the first one did. Basically the whole book takes place in the castle and Sabine and Wolf are separated for a lot of the book. I didn't really care for their individual storylines and I'm not interested in this world or the rest of the plot.

I was basically interested in this book to continue Sabine and Wolf's relationship storyline, but that was frustrating too. It was the same argument from the first book that she's promised to his best friend, but he can't stay away. I'm not a fan of when the author puts spice above all else. The first book was spicy, but in a way that made sense while they likely wouldn't be caught.
Then in this book, we're told that cheating is punishable by death. So they have sex in a tent IN PUBLIC DURING A FESTIVAL, and Wolf has to fight to live. I'm sorry, but no sex is worth likely dying over, even if there's a convenient loophole that lets the MMC survive.

I think the author backed herself into a corner where she wanted the tension and high stakes, but still felt like she had to deliver sexual content. I would've liked it better if there was no spice, but the story made sense,
or if it was leading up to the ending where they were free and could have sex then. I will not be continuing this series because I don't like the amnesia trope. It's overdone and lazy and felt like the author just didn't know how to continue the series with another book, but was contractually obligated to.

As much as I enjoyed the first book, I probably wouldn't recommend this series just because I didn't enjoy this one that much and the first one wasn't so great or complete that it could satisfactorily be read as a standalone. I'd be willing to read another book by this author, but I think it'd have to be a standalone.

I was unsure if I was even going to read this book after the first one but I started to want to know more about this world & what's going to happen with Sabine & Basten. This book was 10/10 I couldn't put it down it was so good I still don't know what I feel about the first one but this one made up for everything I didn't like in the first one.

Okay now that I've said that WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ENDING. DID WE REALLY NEED THAT???? WHY WHAT WAS THE REASON IT HAD ME SICK TO MY STOMACH

Amazing storytelling and world
building. I'm obsessed with this
series and everything about it.
This was so much more than what
I thought I needed. I love that we got
to see so much more from Sabine, Basten (Wolf), and even Rian. I have no words
for that cliffy we where left with. It was
not the way I thought it was going to go
down, totally unexpected. I'm speechless,
and a little broken

It was a solid continuation.  I definitely like the storyline, and am intrigued enough to keep going with the series. It’s got a lot of tropes that I are classic, but the Magic system and storyline feel fresh.
