“Laurie thought this was only a surprising turn of events if you’d never met a man with lots of options and nothing at stake before.”

I absolutely loved this book. It was genuinely hilarious & gave you that indulgent fluffy romance without having to leave your feminist morals at the door.

The only think that gave me kinda mixed feelings was the very beginning + end (not great for first or last impressions lmao). It’s a little slow to start (get ready for a whole load of sad backstory) which I totally understand the reason for but it’s still a little heavy going (for example there are some emotional moments throughout but by then you’re swept up in the characters & the world so it doesn’t drag at all).
And then the end. It’s one of those moments. Let’s just say it kinda deflated my happiness balloon a bit.

For overall enjoyment though, this book is so beautifully written and a million times worth it - excited to read some of her other books :)

“Comedy was tragedy plus time”

I was really drawn into this book, and I wanted to know what would happen. I admit I didn’t read the “back of the cover” before borrowing it from the Libby app. I was looking for a romance novel for the beach. I thought the last 5 or so chapters were a whirlwind. The whole book was such a slow burn until then. I appreciated that Laurie is 36, and Jamie is like 31 or something. I don’t love the “you’re not like other women” type of content, but I appreciated the way Laurie moved through the feelings of her breakup. I also loved her friendship with Emily.

This was such a nice surprise. I picked this up on a whim and I loved it. It took a while to get into the book as the first 100 pages are about Laurie's relationship breakdown, but once Laurie and Jaimie get stuck in the lift the pace picks up a lot. Laurie was such a loveable character, she was flawed, but she was also a strong independent women which I loved. Your definitely not meant to like Jaimie at the beginning but by the end it's hard not to love him. I loved the inclusion of a strong group of supportive friends, and also how the microaggressions where dealt  with in relation to Laurie being black.
