This was honestly so boring. I’m usually such a big fan of McManus’s work but this just fell flat for me. There was so much that happened but I still wasn’t intrigued on the importance of it. And the final reveal honestly wasn’t it. Kind of disappointing. I did like the bayview four callout

Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Children’s for the advance Kindle copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for this murder mystery. A teen returns to her hometown four years after the murder of a beloved teacher, which rocked their private school community. She gets an internship with a true crime show, which leads her to dig more into the murder. However, there is someone out there that doesn’t want her digging. The twists were good, but some of the details were a bit on the mature end. Recommended for grades 9+.

To be honest this book was slow paced and not that memorable. I will say that it was engaging and I was able to read it in two days. I read it a few days ago and I still am having trouble remembering the plot and characters. I felt like everything happened in the last 50 pages, which is not unheard of in mysteries, however I thought the author rushed the ending and reveal and there were many plot holes as to who the killer was. In mysteries I like how authors have foreshadowing or gives clues along the way so the reader can solve alongside the narrator, however I felt like the reveals came out of nowhere and didn't make sense. There were too many side characters in my opinion. I felt like the time spent on side characters could have been spent on making the main characters more three dimensional. One of my main concerns with the book were the main characters and how they were written very flat and dull. I understand that this is a young adult novel and the characters are in high school, however I wish the author put more time into developing these characters instead of leaning on cliche character tropes. The main romantic couple in the novel felt a bit forced as well. The concept of the book and the mystery was intriguing though I felt like it wasn't executed well. It's unfortunate as I did really enjoy other books by this author.

Once you read a KMM book, you just can’t quit.

I checked this book out on a whim knowing it wouldn’t disappoint, and it didn’t. I will admit I liked it a little more than some of her others but it did hook me less - which is interesting.

It did follow a formula, her books are a little procedural: high school students, one whose a know it all, has to work with her enemies and sister to figure out what happened. Is it anything new? No. But it’s familiar and that can be nice when the plot has so much going on.

There was A LOT going on, sometimes I feel like it dragged just a tiny bit, but it never felt muddled and it didn’t leave any loose ends. The chaos added to the whodunit which made it really engaging.

Every single time I thought I knew who did it, I was dead wrong. Once the killer was revealed it shook me!!! But then I was like yeah, of course. That makes total sense.

A very solid choice if you like thrillers.

I always enjoy a Karen M McManus mystery!

I am a big fan of the authors books, and this was no different. I thoroughly enjoyed this! I couldn’t solve the case easily, like it wasn’t obvious to me like it can sometimes be in these types of books.

I loved the brief mention of Maeve Rojas, it was a nice nod to the Bayview Five. This book was a great read and I finished it in one go, and im eagerly waiting for the authors next book.
