I feel any review I could write wouldn't be enough to do this book justice...
It's epic and domestic at the same time, every beginning is an end, it's a cycle of solitary souls coming and going and a testament to how every family member's actions echo in the others' lives past and present. Marquez's way of describing all this is magical and mundane at once.
Just like all the miracolous and tragic events that happen again and again. There are so many genius elements! The Genius loci of a family house that keeps calling back its people and is peacefully haunted by them, political wars and events and that are forgotten because the official history has chosen to obliterate them, the power of nostalgia and what it really is. There is so much to unpack.

Apologies this is a little chaotic, I'm aware.

Note to self: favourite characters were probabily Remedios Buendìa, Colonel Aureliano Buendìa, Ursula and José Arcadio Buendìa.

Very slow reading but lovely book. Particularly hard (as others have said before) to keep track of the family tree and all the damn names. Ultimately I'm skeptical of this "magical realism". To me it feels just like an unreliable or even senile (like some of the characters) narrator.

what a load of bs. i firmly believe márquez is using the magical realism genre as a decoy to normalize the sexualization of children. but what makes this so unbearably revolting is the fact that i was only about 30+ pages into the book and there are already plenty of references to incest, rape, pedophilia, and the hypersexualization of literal children. it's frankly unnecessary and just straight-up creepy.

i finally get why this was "featured" in oprah's book club (whatever that's supposed to mean). really should've taken that as a sign to NOT get this book fml.
