Very slow reading but lovely book. Particularly hard (as others have said before) to keep track of the family tree and all the damn names. Ultimately I'm skeptical of this "magical realism". To me it feels just like an unreliable or even senile (like some of the characters) narrator.

what a load of bs. i firmly believe márquez is using the magical realism genre as a decoy to normalize the sexualization of children. but what makes this so unbearably revolting is the fact that i was only about 30+ pages into the book and there are already plenty of references to incest, rape, pedophilia, and the hypersexualization of literal children. it's frankly unnecessary and just straight-up creepy.

i finally get why this was "featured" in oprah's book club (whatever that's supposed to mean). really should've taken that as a sign to NOT get this book fml.

Ouchie owie so many Jose’s! Uuh this is a really good book that my brain does not like. Hope to come back to it someday

A different headspace this might have been a 4 (I needed an easy to read book and this ain’t it). There were times I didn’t want to put it down, but a lot of times it felt like a chore to pick back up. It’s very dense (longest 417 page book I’ve ever read) and confusing with everyone having the same names. But I can definitely understand people’s love of it.

This was the second time that I read this masterpiece, and I enjoyed it much more. I’m sure I’ll read it again down the road if I’m given the opportunity to continue on this journey.
