One of my new favorites. If you didn’t know it was an homage to Little Women, you would never know. Knowing that makes you treasure the story even more. I loved how the Padavano sister’s personalities meshed with a variety of the March sister’s. It was a challenge deciding who was who, which kept my intrigue. The story was rich with dramatic life changes, but each change felt very normal, and real. Some other things I appreciated were involving unlikable characters, the use of time, and that the story remained in third person, despite the change in character which is really rare, and gave great insight. I thought about this book when I wasn’t reading it, which is always my make of a good novel.

This one is hard to rate. There were large chunks of story that were boring and some characters were stubborn and unlikable, but when it all comes together, it makes sense, and there is a beauty to how that is so reflective of life; imperfect and full of small moments that make up the grander story.

This was a collage of complex characters and a family with generational trauma. Nevertheless, it wasn't entirely dark... It gave a nostalgic feeling, highlighting the morally challenging plot lines and how we reflect on loved ones postmortem. It showed the tenderness of sisters, and a tightknit family in the two cities Chicago and New York. Fabulous start to my 2025 reads!!!

For a novel purely focused on its characters i would have expected each would be bursting with complexity.
