I love everything else Kelly has written. Her short stories are incredible. But this was a slog.

Way too many words...therefore it was really slow going for me because I could have gotten through the book if they just got to the point.

It’s wonderful and also wayyyyy way too long. I respect a doorstop but this really, really, should have been shorter. Atmospheric, really lovely, occasionally clunky dropped in exposition. Totally worthwhile if you can muscle through the pace and length. (Slow, long.)

Some awesome and weird descriptions. A cat who, grooming itself, begins to swallow its leg, and then keeps going, swallowing its whole body until it has swallowed even its smile: “rosy wet gullet snapping together like a fanged coin purse.”

And the chapter, early in the novel in the novel, that I may return to as a short story again: “Time,” thinks Maryanne, “is a row of small and hateful stitches.”

This was waaay before May 28th but anyway. I didn't like how it was written. It was hard for me to read.

I wanted to love this book because it gave Diviners vibes not only with the audiobook narrator, but the cast of characters too. I loved the LGBTQIA along with the BIPOC cast, but the pace did kill me. I did enjoy the mythology, mystery, and plot twists that were built in although I did guess a few of them. I do think this is one of the books I would enjoy more as an adaptation.
