This is tremendously entertaining (especially as performed by January LaVoy) and emotionally involving. Its supernatural plot and character emphasis and pop-cultural specificity suggest a new-century Stephen King. So does the book's overgenerous length. But why complain about having 100 pages too much of an excellent thing.

was worried that this would be a slog, but moved really fast and was incredibly well-written. i think people are conflating “long” with “slow-paced”—the two are not synonymous and i found this to be a fascinating, well-built story that was hard to put down. the choice to flesh out lovesend, the characters, and their relationships with each other before getting into the climax and denouement was a good one, especially within a fantasy setting. idk i feel like im not explaining myself well here, but i also feel like some people are being unnecessarily harsh in their reviews. i loved this a lot! and i think it captured a specific part of massachusetts in a way that struck a chord with me. also i quite enjoy kelly link.

One of the best, most creative books I have ever read. At exactly no point did I know what was going to happen next, and as someone who has read hundreds of books in her lifetime and a strong sense of pattern recognition, that is some of the highest praise I can think to give. The characters are complex and act their age, which means they are frustrating teenagers thrust into magic and death and a plot beyond themselves. Reading this felt like a dream. A+

Something about this reminded me of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell mixed with…idk…Buffy?
Music + magic in a small town stir up trouble within a complicated friend group.
